Ukraine says it has gained control of 82 settlements across an area of 1,150 square kilometers in the region after launching a major cross-border offensive on August 6.

Klymenko said: "The citizens abandoned by Russia are mainly the elderly, the disabled, and families with children. They need food, water, and medicine."

He did not specify how many storage facilities had been set up or where they were located, but a video posted on the Ukrainian interior ministry 's Telegram account showed a large inflatable tent and Ukrainian servicemen carrying parcels and packing food.

During a trip to the Sumy region, bordering Russia's Kursk region, Klymenko said that about 150 food packages had been sent to residents in the area.

Kyiv officials said they plan to create evacuation corridors from the Kursk region and open pathways for international humanitarian missions.

Russia called the Ukrainian attack a "major provocation" and vowed to retaliate with a "proportionate response."

* On the same day, August 16th, Russian Telegram channels reported that Ukrainian troops had destroyed a crucial bridge connecting the border areas of the Kursk region with the right bank of the Seim River.

Local residents reported that a bridge over the river near the village of Glushkovo had been destroyed. The bridge had been targeted for about two days before being demolished.

Based on the damage assessment on the ground, the attacks could be carried out using high-precision artillery shells or HIMARS GMLRS missiles.

This bridge is one of the few important intersections in the area, along with two other road bridges near the villages of Zvannoye and Karyzh and a railway bridge, serving the region.

Destroying these bridges could isolate a significant portion of the Glushkovsky district, cutting it off from the main Russian forces.

Although the Russian military is capable of deploying pontoon ferries to maintain connectivity, this would come with a significant risk of missile attacks by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

The affected part of the Glushkovsky district includes several settlements, such as Toytkino, Popovo-Lezhachi, and Volfino, along with 27 other villages.

As previously reported, the Ukrainian air force attacked Russian military facilities in the Russian village of Tyotkino, 2.5 km from the Russian-Ukrainian border. Ukrainian aircraft attacked command and observation posts, as well as an aircraft hangar containing equipment.

* On the Russian side, on August 16, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that its army had killed 2,860 Ukrainian soldiers and destroyed 41 tanks, 276 armored vehicles, 4 air defense systems, and 6 missile launchers, including three US HIMARS, in Kursk, which had been attacked by Ukraine.

The announcement stated that Russian "Northern" forces repelled an attack on the Russkie Borishny border and also repelled an attack by a group reinforced with five armored vehicles on the town of Gordievka.

Kiev's forces suffered losses in 24 hours totaling 220 soldiers, 19 tanks and armored vehicles, 3 US-made HIMARS missile launchers, two trucks, and two heavy artillery pieces.
