On the second day of his state visit to Vietnam, US President Joe Biden had a busy schedule.
The US President met and attended a reception with President Vo Van Thuong ; met and attended the Vietnam-US Summit on Investment and Innovation with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh; and met with National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue.
Before leaving Hanoi to return home, on the afternoon of September 11, US President Joe Biden went to Truc Bach Lake to commemorate his friend - the late Senator John McCain.
On this occasion, the leaders of the two countries issued a Joint Statement on upgrading Vietnam-US relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership .
The joint statement stressed that since the normalization of bilateral relations in 1995, Vietnam-US relations have developed strongly, deeply, substantially and effectively. This new chapter in the relationship between the two countries will bring the Vietnam-US partnership to a new height.
Together, the two countries will realize the aspirations of their people for a bright and dynamic future, contributing to maintaining peace , stability, cooperation and development in this important region as well as around the world.
At a meeting with President Joe Biden, President Vo Van Thuong welcomed the US's interest in supporting Vietnam in developing sustainable production capacity in areas such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and supporting industries. The President asked the US to continue supporting Vietnam to participate more deeply in global production and supply chains, invest in high technology, and exchange goods and services.
The US President expressed his belief that the relationship between the two countries will continue to achieve more achievements after the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership framework is established.
Meeting with US President Joe Biden, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said that economic, trade and investment cooperation should be considered the “eternal engine” of bilateral relations. The Prime Minister suggested that the US soon recognize Vietnam’s market economy status, upgrade the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement, and continue to encourage US high-tech enterprises to do business in Vietnam.
President Biden suggested that the two sides strengthen cooperation in the semiconductor supply chain through a human resource training program for Vietnam, thereby gradually supporting Vietnam to participate more deeply and become an important link in supply chains in the region and the world.
Next, the US President and National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue witnessed the ceremony of handing over war diaries to Vietnamese veterans at the National Assembly House.
Mr. Joe Biden said that during his 36 years in Congress, he has always supported strengthening the US-Vietnam relationship and has always contributed to normalizing relations between the two countries since the first day of establishing relations. National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue expressed his appreciation for President Biden's good feelings and contributions to the Vietnam-US relationship.
The two leaders also shared many common values between the two countries and two peoples, including the sacred rights recorded in the 1776 American Declaration of Independence and which President Ho Chi Minh cited in the opening of the September 2, 1945 Declaration of Independence that gave birth to the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
During their final schedule in Vietnam , President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry laid flowers at the memorial bas-relief of the late Senator John McCain located by the lake on Thanh Nien Street.
