After storm No. 5, visiting the "vegetable barn" of Nghe An in Quynh Anh commune (formerly Quynh Luu district) showed that the lush green vegetable fields were now covered with mud, the vegetable beds were withered and wilted. Many areas of mustard greens, scallions... were crushed or washed away, the roots rotted due to waterlogging. Farmers returned to the fields with sorrowful eyes, as their capital and efforts had been lost.

Ms. Ho Thi Canh, a farmer in Hoc Van hamlet, Quynh Anh commune, said: After just one night of wind and storm, all the young vegetables were crushed. Now, if we want to start again, we have to wait for the sun to shine and the soil to dry before we can replant, while it is still raining. For the onion fields that are close to harvest time but have been crushed, it will take some time before we can harvest.
"My family grew more than 1.5 sao of onions and vegetables, now it's considered a total loss. One sao of investment in seeds and fertilizer cost nearly 5 million VND. Now if we do it again, the cost will increase again," said Ms. Ho Thi Canh.

Not only Quynh Anh commune, coastal vegetable areas of Dien Chau, An Chau communes... are in the same situation. People said that they will have to pull out and start over from scratch.
Mr. Bui Xuan Truc - Head of the Economic Department of Quynh Anh Commune said: The vegetables and onions that were harvested were harvested before the storm. The remaining ones, after the storm, due to the fields being flooded and the soil being wet, people have not been able to go to the fields to restore. More worryingly, the tropical depression is heading inland, and there is a risk of heavy rain in the coming days. Therefore, the shortage of vegetables will continue and vegetable prices will increase in the coming time.

In fact, the situation of green vegetables being scarce and expensive occurred right after storm No. 5 dissipated, at the local markets in the wards of the old Vinh city. Reporters' records show that in the days after the storm, the prices of green vegetables increased. Some vegetable items: water spinach, mustard greens, coriander, green onions... all doubled in price. Green vegetable wholesalers said that the supply of vegetables from the province's supply areas was almost non-existent, and they had to import more from other provinces, but it was still not enough.

With the current weather conditions, the risk of vegetable shortage in Nghe An may last for the coming days. Consumers will have to accept higher prices, while farmers face the problem of reproducing in difficult conditions./.
