Overcoming difficulties in aquaculture, Ha Tinh harvests nearly 8,000 tons of brackish water aquatic products

Since the beginning of the year, aquaculture farmers in brackish water areas of Ha Tinh province have overcome difficulties to harvest nearly 8,000 tons of various products.

In the early months of this year, in addition to extreme weather conditions, the water sources supplying brackish water aquaculture areas in Loc Ha harbor dangerous viruses that cause diseases in farmed species.

Overcoming difficulties in aquaculture, Ha Tinh province harvests nearly 8,000 tons of brackish water seafood.

Large-sized shrimp batches from Hong Anh Company (Mai Phu commune, Loc Ha district) are being sold.

Of these, the most dangerous is the whiteleg shrimp (the most important farmed species in the area), which is suffering from white spot disease, hepatopancreatic necrosis, red body syndrome, stunted growth, etc., occurring in many places, including facilities that have invested in intensive, high-tech farming in cement tanks, net houses, and ponds lined with tarpaulin.

In particular, an outbreak of white spot disease affecting 2.5 hectares belonging to 5 households in Mai Phu commune forced the farmers and specialized agencies to treat the area with chlorine chemicals.

Determined to maintain their livelihoods and stabilize production, aquaculture farmers in Loc Ha have strived to overcome negative impacts and minimize the effects on production. In addition to maintaining the stability of existing farming areas, Mai Phu commune has developed three modern aquaculture models that have initially yielded promising results: a 10-hectare high-tech shrimp farming model by Hong Anh Company, a 1,000-box indoor high -tech crab farming model by Nguyen Van Quang, and a 1-hectare two-stage crab farming model by Mr. To Dinh Le.

By effectively utilizing 291 hectares of brackish water for aquaculture, in the first nine months of 2023, Loc Ha harvested 1,778 tons of various products, including approximately 360 tons of whiteleg shrimp, with the remainder being clams, crabs, various types of fish, tiger prawns, etc.

Shrimp farmers in Thach Ha, Loc Ha, Cam Xuyen, Ky Anh, and other districts are boldly investing in high-tech farming methods to ensure safety, increase productivity, and boost profits.

Along with Loc Ha, aquaculture farmers throughout the province have also made efforts to overcome difficulties to ensure production levels and improve income.

According to Le Anh Duc, Deputy Head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Nghi Xuan District: “In implementing the 2023 brackish water aquaculture production plan, farmers throughout the district maintained 534 hectares (the same as last year) to raise species such as shrimp, crab, mullet, grouper, snapper, etc., and harvested 1,401 tons of products. During the production process, farmers focused on overcoming unfavorable factors such as weather, diseases, water pollution, high feed prices, poor quality of fry, and price manipulation by traders when selling.”

According to statistics, from the beginning of September until now (the period when the rainy and stormy season begins, requiring harvesting or crop rotation for the winter season), aquaculture farmers in brackish water areas of Ha Tinh have harvested 2,222 tons of various products, achieving a production value of nearly 181 billion VND.

Currently, some coastal areas (especially high-tech, safe farming areas) are continuing to reinforce ponds, clean breeding tanks, sanitize the farming environment, implement measures to prevent storms and diseases, prepare water sources, arrange for seeds and feed... to raise crops for the winter season, and have products for sale during Tet (Lunar New Year), especially whiteleg shrimp and crab.

Residents of Thach Lac commune (Thach Ha district) are initially achieving considerable profits from raising yellowfin snapper in ponds lined with tarpaulin.

According to Nguyen Thi Hoai Thuy, Head of the Aquaculture Management Department (Fisheries Sub-Department, Ha Tinh Department of Agriculture and Rural Development): “Despite certain difficulties, brackish water aquaculture activities in our province from the beginning of the year until now have reached 2,700 hectares (97% of the annual plan). Of this production area, 2,154 hectares are used for shrimp farming (1,887 hectares for whiteleg shrimp, the rest for tiger shrimp), 124 hectares for crab and fish farming, and 422 hectares for mollusks. Shrimp is identified as the main aquaculture species, yielding high production value, with 614 hectares using high-tech farming, 462 hectares using semi-intensive farming, and the remainder using improved extensive or extensive farming.”

“Thanks to the strengthened management and active guidance of production by all levels and sectors, and the efforts of aquaculture farmers in overcoming difficulties, the total brackish water aquaculture production in the province from the beginning of the year to date has reached nearly 8,000 tons (85% of the annual plan), bringing in a production value of nearly 540 billion VND. Of this, the production of various types of shrimp reached 4,465 tons, various types of fish reached 250 tons, and the remainder was other aquaculture species,” Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoai Thuy further informed.
