xAI joins the "model the world" race with Meta and Google

Billionaire Elon Musk's xAI company has officially joined the race to develop “world models” – systems that can extend AI's capabilities beyond large language models.

Billionaire Elon Musk's company xAI, based in San Francisco (USA), has officially joined the race with competitors such as Meta and Google to develop Artificial Intelligence system models (AI models) capable of navigating and designing physical environments.

In recent months, the company has hired experts from Nvidia to develop next-generation AI models, trained on video and robot data to improve understanding of the real world .

These systems — also known as “world models” — can extend AI capabilities beyond large language models — the foundation of popular tools like xAI's ChatGPT and Grok — which are trained solely on text.

xAI is building AI models for use in the gaming industry, where they can create interactive 3D environments, two sources said.

Another source said the company could also apply the technology to AI systems for robots. xAI has hired Zeeshan Patel and Ethan He, two AI researchers from Nvidia with experience in world modeling.

Nvidia is currently leading the development of this technology through its Omniverse platform, which specializes in creating and running simulations.

Some tech companies hope the “world model” will open up AI applications beyond software and computers, to physical products like humanoid robots.

According to Nvidia, the potential market for the world model could be roughly equivalent to the size of the current global economy./ .
