After the merger, Da Nang became the largest city in Vietnam by area, comprising 94 commune-level administrative units, including 70 communes, 23 wards, and the Hoang Sa Special Zone.

The People's Committee of Da Nang City has appointed Ms. Le Thi Bich Thuan, City Party Committee member and former Director of the Department of Education and Training of Da Nang City, to the position of Director of the Department of Education and Training of Da Nang City.

Four Deputy Directors of the Department of Education and Training have been appointed, including Mr. Mai Tan Linh; Mr. Tran Nguyen Minh Thanh; Mr. Pham Tan Ngoc Thuy; and Mr. Nguyen Hoang Nam.

Diverse types of schools

One of the highlights of the city's education system in recent times is the network of schools and classrooms that are planned in accordance with the national education system, while also meeting the scale and requirements of urban development and the learning needs of all citizens of all ages in the area.

According to statistics, the former Da Nang City had 393 educational institutions, including 197 preschools, 99 primary schools with 106,517 students, 60 secondary schools with 76,233 students, 34 high schools with 38,061 students; and 3 continuing education centers with 5,320 trainees.

As of June 2025, the former Quang Nam province had 723 public schools (225 kindergartens, 227 primary schools, 217 lower secondary schools, and 54 upper secondary schools), 1 Provincial Continuing Education Center, and 70 private schools (62 kindergartens, 1 upper secondary school, and 7 multi-level general education schools) with a total of 12,600 classes and 378,640 students. The total number of administrators, teachers, and staff in the entire education sector was 29,111, including 1,766 administrators, 22,161 teachers, and 5,184 staff members.

The management and teaching staff are basically sufficient in quantity and structure; the number of qualified teachers is high, and they adapt quickly to the implementation of the 2018 General Education Program.

Educational institutions have proactively and flexibly developed school education plans, subject teaching plans, and educational activities that are appropriate to their actual conditions, while ensuring that the goals and content meet the requirements of the 2018 General Education Program; organized many teaching and educational activities to develop students' competencies and qualities; diversified learning methods, strengthened life skills education; and implemented many new and creative models to improve the quality and comprehensive development of students.

Prior to the merger, the Quang Nam Department of Education and Training reviewed and reorganized schools, school branches, and classrooms, along with the allocation of management staff, teachers, and education personnel, up to the 2029-2030 school year. By the 2029-2030 school year, it is projected that the province will have 726 public kindergartens and primary and secondary schools; a reduction of 1 kindergarten and 1 primary school, an increase of 1 secondary school and 1 high school, and the establishment of 1 new primary and secondary school.

The Department of Education and Training of Da Nang City (formerly) is implementing the Project for Building, Upgrading, and Expanding Schools in the period 2021-2025. The project aims to build, upgrade, and expand the school network to 452 units/schools with approximately 339,315 students by the 2025-2026 school year. The initial investment for the project is 4,399 billion VND for 5 years, not including compensation for land clearance. During the 2021-2025 period, 43 new schools will be built.

To achieve the goals, the plan addresses solutions to expand the network, develop the scale of education and training towards diversification of types; reorganize educational institutions, merge small primary and secondary schools; and ensure land area for the construction of educational and training facilities.

Metropolitan Area Higher Education Center

Before the merger, Da Nang had 61 vocational education institutions; nearly 20 universities and higher education institutions, contributing to the supply of human resources for the labor market of the city, the Central and Central Highlands regions, and the whole country.

On February 27, 2025, the Prime Minister signed Decision 452/QD-TTg approving the plan for the higher education network until 2030, with a vision to 2050. The plan establishes four major higher education centers in four metropolitan areas: Hanoi, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, and Can Tho. The Da Nang metropolitan area higher education center is built upon three pillars: Hue University, Da Nang University, and Duy Tan University.

Da Nang University alone has nearly 2,600 staff and lecturers (a six-fold increase), including 127 professors and associate professors (an almost ten-fold increase), and 758 doctors of science (an over sixteen-fold increase); the percentage of lecturers with doctoral degrees is 48%, with the University of Technology exceeding 70%, and the national average being 32%. Thanks to its high-quality faculty, Da Nang University has developed into a multidisciplinary university with a training scale among the top in the country, establishing its brand with nearly 55,000 full-time students and international students (an 8.5-fold increase) in 136 undergraduate programs, 48 master's programs, and 32 doctoral programs.

The University of Da Nang is developing into a national research-oriented university, focusing on training talented, high-quality students and postgraduate education linked to scientific research and innovation, fulfilling national strategic tasks; prioritizing basic sciences, engineering, technology, and several other key fields… The project to build the University of Da Nang in Hoa Quy - Dien Ngoc is currently underway with a total investment of over 117 million USD, equivalent to over 2,767 billion VND.

Duy Tan University is the first private higher education institution to become a university. Over the years, the institution has collaborated with leading American universities to "import" training programs, such as: with Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) to implement international standard programs in Software Technology, Information Systems, and Cybersecurity; with Pennsylvania State University to train programs in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance-Banking, Tourism, Hotel & Restaurant Management; with California State University at Fullerton and Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo (CSU-CalState) to train in Architecture-Construction; and with Purdue University to implement programs in Electrical-Electronics and Mechatronics. It also collaborates with Hue University, Hue Central Hospital, Da Nang Hospital, and a number of major universities such as the University of Pittsburgh (UPitt), the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), Duke University School of Medicine - NUS (Singapore), etc., to train specialized health science disciplines at Duy Tan University.

Recently, the Ministry of Education and Training decided to merge the Da Nang College of Culture and Arts into the Da Nang Vocational College and rename it Da Nang College.

Regarding the reorganization of commune-level administrative buildings, Quang Nam province has a significant surplus. It is expected that these surplus buildings will be repurposed to house police stations, military command centers, commune-level health stations, city-level agencies and units, preschool, primary, and secondary schools (including housing for teachers in mountainous areas), cultural and sports facilities for neighborhoods, and community centers.
