Thanakrit (59 years old), from Bangkok, Thailand, met a young woman named Nong Fon (23 years old) through a dating app in December 2023.
Fon introduced herself as a final-year nursing student. They chatted on social media, and on Valentine's Day 2024, Fon confessed her feelings to Thanakrit, Thaiger reported on November 21.
They met in person and started dating. The couple had a happy time together, traveling to many places. During that time, Thanakrit provided for all of Fon's expenses and bought her a new phone.
In April 2024, Thanakrit met Fon's family in Surin province, Thailand. After that, their relationship became more serious. They planned to hold their wedding on July 14th.
Fon's family demanded a dowry of 500,000 baht (over 368 million VND). Thanakrit agreed and committed to transferring 372,000 baht (over 273 million VND) upfront, with the remainder to be paid on the wedding day.
Thanakrit felt a little suspicious when he discovered that the bank account Fon had asked him to transfer money to was the nursing school account she was attending, not her personal account.
Nevertheless, he trusted Fon and transferred the dowry as requested. They rented a wedding dress and made plans for the big day.
However, everything suddenly fell apart when Thanakrit noticed a change in Fon. She frequently dressed provocatively and chatted with other men on social media. They argued, and Thanakrit decided to tell Fon's family, which angered her.
Finally, Fon left, canceling the wedding altogether. Thanakrit asked her to return the dowry money, but she refused. Only then did he realize he had been deceived.
In reality, Fon was only exploiting his love and trust to get money to cover his living expenses and tuition fees. Thanakrit sought help from the police and the non-profit organization Saimai Survive in the hope of getting his money back.
