On February 28, Thong Nhat Hospital (Ho Chi Minh City) announced that it had successfully saved the life of a female patient suffering from severe respiratory failure after drinking "happy water".
Specifically, the patient is a 23-year-old woman (residing in Tan Phu district) who was admitted to the hospital in a state of severe respiratory failure on the evening of February 27th.
According to the patient's account, at around 11 PM she attended a birthday party with a group of five friends. One of them bought an unlabeled bottle of liquor and drank it.
After drinking a few glasses, the patient realized it was "happy water" to enhance feelings of joy and exhilaration.
About two hours later, the patient began vomiting, fell into a coma, and experienced rapid respiratory failure, and was transferred to Thong Nhat Hospital for emergency treatment. The other people were unaffected.
Recognizing this as a critical respiratory failure situation, the doctors immediately intubated the patient and put him on a ventilator. Fortunately, after 24 hours, the patient's health stabilized and he is currently being monitored in the intensive care unit.
Dr. Hoang Ngoc Anh, deputy head of the intensive care and anti-poisoning department at Thong Nhat Hospital, said that tests revealed the "happy water" the patient consumed contained primarily addictive substances such as amphetamine, methamphetamine, and ketamine.
These are particularly dangerous and potentially life-threatening addictive substances.
Each year, the hospital receives an average of 5-7 emergency cases following the use of narcotics, including ecstasy. This is the first time the unit has treated a case of someone taking "happy water" leading to a critical condition.
Currently, there is no antidote for these poisoning cases; patients only receive supportive treatment such as intubation and mechanical ventilation. If patients arrive late, the prognosis is very critical.
According to Doctor Anh, using "happy water" causes euphoria due to its effect on the nervous system; patients feel refreshed, stimulated, talkative, and this can then lead to seizures, agitation, multi-organ damage, stroke, myocardial infarction, etc.
"Therefore, do not try these stimulants even once, as using them will have serious consequences for yourself, such as endangering your life or posing a danger to those around you," Dr. Anh advised.
Hospitalized after using ecstasy.
On the same day, Thong Nhat Hospital also announced that it had admitted and treated a 50-year-old man from Tan Binh District (Ho Chi Minh City) who had suffered from stimulant poisoning.
According to the patient's account, after a drinking session, some friends invited him to a "beer girl" bar and pressured him to take stimulants. After returning home, the patient became lethargic and was taken to the emergency room at Thong Nhat Hospital by his relatives.
The patient, diagnosed with amphetamine poisoning from ecstasy pills, received prompt and intensive treatment, including rehydration, oxygen therapy, and vital signs monitoring. By the morning of February 28th, the patient had been discharged from the hospital.
