6 people in critical condition after drinking wine soaked with tree roots

Six men in Son Lam commune (Nghe An) showed symptoms of convulsions and coma during a drinking party at noon and were taken to the hospital in critical condition.

On the afternoon of October 19, Mr. Nguyen Thinh Khuyen, Director of Thanh Chuong General Hospital ( Nghe An ), said that the hospital had activated the red alert when receiving reports of 6 cases of suspected alcohol poisoning from lower levels.

At about 12 noon the same day, 6 male patients were taken to the hospital by Son Lam Commune Health Station and Son Lam Commune Police in a state of convulsions, coma, and in some cases, respiratory arrest.

The medical team of Thanh Chuong General Hospital performed emergency procedures, intubation, ventilators, and medication... for the patients.

After emergency treatment, all 6 patients were transferred to provincial hospitals for intensive treatment.

Initial information, at noon of the same day, the 6 men above ate rice and drank wine soaked with some types of tree stems and roots. After drinking 3 small glasses each, these people showed symptoms of suspected poisoning.

Thanh Chuong Preventive Medicine Center is coordinating with Son Lam commune authorities to investigate the cause of the poisoning. The medicinal wine bottle has also been sealed to clarify the incident.
