The 2023 Thanh Nien Open 3-Cushion Billiards Tournament was jointly organized by the Thanh Nien Newspaper Journalists' Association and the Ho Chi Minh City Journalists' Association. The tournament brought together 48 players, including reporters and editors from various media outlets, partners, sponsor representatives, and invited guests.
The tournament featured many professional female billiards players as guests, including Nguyen Hoang Yen Nhi, Phung Kien Tuong, Nguyen Le Lien Quynh, Luong Thi Thom, Nguyen Duc Yen Sinh, and Le Thi Ngoc Hue.

After approximately four hours of competition, the 2023 Thanh Nien Open Billiards Tournament has determined the 32 names advancing to the round of 32. The biggest surprise was the final result of the play-off match between Ly Minh Tan (reporter for Thanh Nien Newspaper) and Le Thi Ngoc Hue (SEA Games 2023 gold medalist in 1-cushion carom billiards).
Earlier, Ngoc Hue had won her opening match, while Minh Tan lost his first game in the tournament. However, the 2023 SEA Games gold medalist was unlucky to be in the group of four athletes who had to play one more match to qualify for the round of 32. Facing the tight defense of the representative from Thanh Nien Newspaper, Ngoc Hue fought hard but was eliminated early.

In addition, many of the first round and play-off matches were very exciting and particularly unpredictable, especially with the tournament's new format: each set is worth 9 points, and if there is a tie after two sets, a penalty shootout takes place, with the first shot to hit the cushion counting as 2 points.
Besides Ngoc Hue's unfortunate elimination, female contestants like Phung Kien Tuong, Nguyen Hoang Yen Nhi, Nguyen Le Lien Quynh, Nguyen Duc Yen Sinh, and Luong Thi Thom all qualified for the round of 32.

In addition, the top players from the 2022 Thanh Nien Open Billiards Tournament have maintained their strength, with defending champion Nguyen Huy Hoang ( VOV ), runner-up Nguyen The Anh ( VOH ), and third-place finisher Nguyen Thai Nguyen ( Thanh Nien Newspaper) all participating in the round for the top 32 players.
Tomorrow (June 24th), the Thanh Nien Open 3-Cushion Billiards Tournament will officially open at the Nguyen Du Gymnasium. Following the opening ceremony, athletes will compete in the round of 32, round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals.
Nguyen Le Lien Quynh, a player who previously competed in the LPBA tournament in South Korea, had to play three matches on June 23rd and successfully secured a place in the round of 32.
Phung Kien Tuong won the silver medal in the 1-cushion event and the bronze medal in the 3-cushion event at the 2023 SEA Games, advancing to the round of 32.
Professional referees from the Ho Chi Minh City Billiards & Snooker Federation will officiate at the 2023 Youth Open Billiards Tournament.
Guest player Tran Nu Thuy Tram won her first round match but was unlucky to be among the four players who had to play an extra match and was eliminated after losing to Nguyen Le Lien Quynh.
The player from Thai Nguyen (from Thanh Nien Newspaper) lost to female player Phung Kien Tuong in the first round but advanced through the play-off to the round of 32.
Billiards player Vo Thanh Dung Phuong ( Saigon Giai Phong Newspaper) tried his best but could not get past the qualifying and play-off rounds.

Billiards player Tú Hân (pictured left, Ho Chi Minh City Billiards & Snooker Federation ) lost to player Trí Viễn ( FPT Play ) in the decisive match for a spot in the round of 32.
Billiards player Tan Phum ( Binh Duong Television Station ) also made it to the round of the top 32 players.
Billiards player Bui Hong Nam (from Thanh Nien Newspaper) has reached the round of 32.
