14 year old boy with rare nasopharyngeal fibroma

(DN) - On the evening of September 10, information from Thuan My ITO Dong Nai Hospital said: The hospital had just received and provided emergency treatment for a male patient named NHP, 14 years old, from Dinh Quan commune, who was suffering from a nosebleed that was severe, continuous, and difficult to stop.

According to the patient's family, since childhood, NHP occasionally had nosebleeds, but simply elevating her head would stop the bleeding. Recently, this has become more frequent, with nosebleeds occurring almost every two days. Each recurrence involves heavier bleeding, causing the family to worry and prompting them to take her to the emergency room.

At the hospital, doctors quickly administered emergency treatment to stop the bleeding, then performed an endoscopic examination of the patient's ear, nose, and throat. During the endoscopy, doctors discovered a large vascular tumor originating from the patient's right nasopharynx, extending forward and almost completely covering the patient's right nasal cavity.

According to Dr. Tran Trong Phat, a specialist in Otolaryngology at Thuan My ITO Hospital in Dong Nai, "Nasal nasopharyngeal fibromas are vascular in origin and are very prone to massive bleeding. With a large, highly vascular tumor like this case, treatment requires prior embolization using DSA (digital subtraction angiography) before proceeding with safe surgery."

According to Dr. Tran Trong Phat, nasopharyngeal fibroma is a rare disease. Warning signs include: frequent nosebleeds, prolonged nasal congestion, tinnitus, and headaches. If not detected and treated promptly, the tumor can invade the nasal cavity, sinuses, skull base, and eye socket, causing many dangerous complications such as: prolonged blood loss leading to anemia, weakness, and even hemorrhagic shock; severe nasal congestion, sinusitis, proptosis, double vision, decreased vision, otitis media, paralysis of cranial nerves; meningitis, and brain abscess.

Following the surgery, the NHP patient recovered well and has now stopped experiencing nosebleeds.
