Specialist Doctor I Nguyen Thi Dung, Dermatology specialist, Shing Mark University Hospital of Medicine and Pharmacy said: The male patient's squamous cell papilloma is not only a cosmetic problem but also related to an extremely rare dermatological disorder, where the immune system is "powerless" against the attack of the virus. The world has only recorded a few dozen cases described in medical literature.

The removed tumor had a firm, rough surface with dense layers of pale yellow keratinization. This is a typical manifestation of keratinizing papilloma, a lesion originating from the epidermis of the skin. This type of tumor usually develops slowly, initially as small nodules but then spreads and strongly keratinizes.

Although most cases do not cause pain or itching, their appearance has a great impact on the patient's aesthetics and psychology. In particular, this skin lesion has characteristics similar to tree bark or roots, making it also known by the folk name "Tree Man Syndrome".

The cause of this condition is determined to be closely related to immunodeficiency, making the body unable to fight against human papillomavirus (HPV) strains, especially HPV5 and HPV8.

Studies show that the disease can originate from two main groups of causes. Genetic (related to recessive gene mutations EVER 1 or EVER 2 on the autosome, causing a defect in the ability to create an immune response to HPV); acquired (occurs in people with a history of immunodeficiency, organ transplant patients, or affected by immunosuppressive treatments).

Although squamous cell papilloma is generally considered benign, experts warn that it can become malignant. About 90% of skin cancers are associated with this syndrome. Some papillomas can turn into precancerous or malignant skin dysplasia if not treated promptly.

Dr. Dung emphasized: After removing the tumor, care and prevention of recurrence is extremely important. Patients have been instructed to thoroughly clean their skin, especially in sensitive or folded areas to remove bacteria and dirt. Limit wearing clothes that are too tight or stiff and rub against the damaged skin area. At the same time, have regular check-ups or if abnormalities are detected.
