In Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, over 50% of children in this age group are affected by refractive errors, with myopia being the most common. Incorrect study habits and excessive use of electronic devices are the main causes.

This information was provided by Dr. Dinh Thi Phuong Thuy, an ophthalmologist and Director of Dong Do Hospital, at an international conference on pediatric eye care recently held in Hanoi. The conference, attended by leading international and Vietnamese ophthalmology experts, provided updates on the latest advancements in screening, care, and treatment of eye diseases in children.
According to Dr. Thuy, children can experience many eye problems, from common refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism to more complex conditions such as amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus, and congenital glaucoma. Of these, amblyopia accounts for about 1-5% of children under 6 years old.
Some cases also carry the risk of conjunctivitis and nystagmus, a condition that causes uncontrolled eye movement and threatens vision if not treated promptly. Dong Do Hospital and its partners will build a modern ophthalmology ecosystem, applying advanced ophthalmology techniques in Vietnam to help detect and intervene early in children with visual disorders.
