Previously, the patient was hit by a firecracker that flew straight into his right eye during Tet (February 2025) while traveling on the road, causing trauma, cataracts, a feeling of glare, and vision loss. The patient had been to several medical facilities for examination, but had not yet received complete treatment.

Recently, when his eyesight deteriorated rapidly and affected his daily life, his family took Mr. T. to Hoa Lu Eye Hospital for examination. As a result of the examination, the doctors diagnosed the patient with cataracts due to trauma, accompanied by a broken iris root.

According to Dr. Nguyen Thi Thuy Tien, Head of the General Ophthalmology Department, Hoa Lu Eye Hospital, this is a complicated treatment case, due to prolonged damage causing deformation of the eye's anatomical structure, and at the same time causing functional visual disturbances - especially severe glare due to the iris losing its ability to regulate light. The team consulted with Dr. Tran Ba Kien, Chairman of the Senior Professional Council - VISI Medical Group to have an optimal treatment regimen for the patient.

The patient was indicated for iridoplasty combined with artificial lens replacement using the Phaco method.

After 25 minutes of surgery, the patient's condition was stable and his vision improved. At a follow-up visit two days after surgery, the patient's right eye vision had increased from 2/10 to 8/10, while the sensation of glare when exposed to strong light was significantly reduced - one of the important clinical symptoms to assess the ability to recover visual function after a ruptured iris.

“Eye injuries caused by firecrackers, sharp objects or work accidents can cause serious damage to the cornea, iris or lens. Patients should absolutely not self-treat or delay examination. It is extremely important to go to an eye specialist early so that the doctor can properly assess the extent of the damage and intervene promptly, avoiding the risk of permanent vision loss,” Dr. Thuy Tien advised.
