Mr. C. stated that in late March 2025, he experienced choking while eating, and the choking symptoms worsened, so he went for a health check-up at a lower-level hospital. The doctor performed an endoscopy and discovered that Mr. C. had a malignant tumor in his esophagus, so he was urgently transferred to Dong Nai General Hospital.
According to Dr. Nguyen Kim Kien, Deputy Head of the General Surgery - Digestive Department at Dong Nai General Hospital, the patient was diagnosed with esophageal cancer and prescribed chemotherapy and radiotherapy. After the chemotherapy and radiotherapy sessions, on July 9th, the patient underwent surgery to remove a large tumor in the esophagus.
For over eight hours, the doctors had to concentrate intensely, performing precise and meticulous procedures in three areas. This included endoscopic surgery in the chest to remove the esophageal tumor, then opening the abdomen to retrieve the stomach and reconstruct it into a new digestive tract, and finally guiding a tunnel up the neck, connecting the cervical esophagus to the stomach.
According to Dr. Kien, this was a very difficult major surgery. The patient's chest cavity contained many nerves and large blood vessels, and if the entire team wasn't highly focused, even a small mistake could lead to the surgery's failure.
The surgery was unexpectedly successful, and the patient recovered quickly. After being discharged, the patient was scheduled for a follow-up appointment to continue chemotherapy.
Dr. Kien shared that endoscopic thoracoscopic surgery, specifically esophageal resection and reconstruction for treating esophageal cancer, is a highly specialized and difficult technique, currently performed by very few provincial hospitals. This technique was transferred to the hospital by experts from the University Medical Center of Ho Chi Minh City two years ago. However, this is the first case where the team at Dong Nai General Hospital was able to independently perform the entire procedure.
The fact that provincial hospitals in Dong Nai can perform this advanced technique not only helps reduce the burden on higher-level hospitals but also gives patients, especially those in difficult circumstances, the opportunity to receive treatment, reducing costs and travel time.
Esophageal cancer is currently one of the 14 most common types of cancer. In its early stages, the disease has no symptoms; patients only seek medical attention when they experience difficulty swallowing, at which point it is often quite late, with the tumor already large and narrowing the digestive tract. Therefore, doctors recommend that people over 45-50 years old undergo endoscopy for esophageal and stomach screening, and seek early treatment if any problems are detected.
