Scoliosis is not just a physical condition; it also poses a serious threat to the quality of life and overall health of patients. If left undetected and untreated, it can cause spinal deformities, affecting mobility, psychological well-being, and even life itself. Therefore, timely monitoring and surgical intervention are crucial factors in protecting the future of young patients.

Scoliosis correction surgery for a 15 -year-old patient.
With the mission of providing healthcare for both military personnel and civilians, the 121 Military Hospital recently successfully performed a scoliosis correction surgery on a 15-year-old patient, LHGH, residing in Can Tho City. This further marks significant progress in the professional capabilities of the 121 Military Hospital in the field of spinal orthopedic surgery.
Prior to hospitalization, the child with LHGH had shown signs of spinal abnormalities for about two years, but had not received treatment. Recently, the hunchback on the right side became increasingly pronounced, affecting gait and mobility. Therefore, the family brought the child to the Military Hospital 121 (Ninh Kieu Ward, Can Tho City) for examination. After X-rays and other clinical tests, the doctors diagnosed the child with scoliosis, tilted to the right, limiting walking and movement.

Although the patient was still able to walk, further delaying surgery would significantly increase the risk of complications. Not only would it affect motor function, but the condition would also have a strong impact on the child's psychology and appearance during their developmental stage. Given this situation, Military Hospital 121 decided to hold a professional consultation, inviting leading experts in spinal surgery to provide support.
Improving the quality of life for patients.
Dr. Vu Viet Chinh, a specialist in pediatric scoliosis surgery (member of the Executive Board of the Vietnam Spinal Surgery Association), provided professional support. With extensive experience in spinal surgery, Dr. Vu Viet Chinh, together with the Neurosurgery Department of Military Hospital 121, meticulously planned the surgery, from assessing the degree of curvature to developing the optimal correction plan.

An indispensable element of the surgery was anesthesia and resuscitation. The patient, only 15 years old and weighing 40 kg, faced numerous risks during anesthesia. The surgical teams meticulously planned for absolute safety, preparing to handle situations such as blood loss, the need for large-volume blood transfusions, prolonged prone ventilation, and ensuring effective postoperative pain management for a speedy recovery.
The surgery went smoothly for over three hours, and the patient's endotracheal tube was removed in the operating room. The patient was pain-free and had good leg movement, bringing overwhelming joy to the entire surgical and anesthesia/resuscitation team – a touching moment marking a success beyond expectations.

Following the surgery, the patient continued to be closely monitored in the Intensive Care Unit. Post-operative X-ray images showed that the spine had been very well realigned, with no more severe deformities as before. More importantly, no nerve damage occurred, a crucial factor in spinal surgery. The patient recovered well, regained normal leg movement, and was discharged; the surgery was not only technically successful but also significantly improved the patient's quality of life.
