Accordingly, on the morning of December 11th, the Rural Development and Forestry Department of Can Tho City, in coordination with the Phu Huu Commune Police, verified information posted on social media by a personal account named NTQ, stating that "a crocodile weighing approximately 200-300kg appeared in the Nang Mau canal (near the Large White Bridge)." The post also included two photos of the canal and a crocodile floating in it.

The image was taken from a post by the NTQ account. Photo: Provided by the Department of Rural Development and Forestry of Can Tho City.
Immediately after receiving the report, the Can Tho City Rural Development and Forestry Department directed the Forestry Department of Region III and the Mobile Forestry and Fire Prevention Team to coordinate with the Phu Huu Commune Police to conduct an on-site inspection in Dong Loi A hamlet (Phu Huu commune) - where the crocodile was allegedly spotted according to the account mentioned above.
Working with the village head and local residents, authorities determined that no crocodiles were found floating on the river in Dong Loi A hamlet, contrary to the published information.
Mr. Nguyen Van To, a resident living right at the beginning of the canal, confirmed that the image of the canal in the post is indeed in front of his house. However, he asserted that there are no crocodiles floating on the river and that the information is incorrect.
Continuing their investigation with the account holder NTQ, the Phu Huu Commune Police determined that the posted information was untrue. The crocodile image was also taken from another account, and no crocodiles have ever appeared at the address mentioned.
Authorities are currently working with the account holder NTQ to clarify the purpose of the post. Simultaneously, the Forest Protection Department of Region III recommends that the relevant authorities request the account holder to remove the post, correct the information to avoid causing public panic, and consider taking action according to regulations regarding the posting of false information on social media.
Previously, in November 2025, the Rural Development and Forestry Department of Can Tho City also received reports from residents and verified and clarified the matter of crocodiles surfacing on the river in Phung Tuong 2 hamlet (Nhon My commune).
The Sub-Department advises households registered to breed dangerous wild animals to regularly inspect and reinforce their enclosures to ensure safety and prevent the animals from escaping during the rainy season and when river levels rise. If a household discovers an animal has escaped, they must take measures to capture it, preventing harm to residents and avoiding public panic.
Can Tho City currently has 10 registered freshwater crocodile breeding facilities with a total of 4,769 individuals, located in the communes of Thanh Tri, Gia Hoa, Hoa Tu and the wards of Khanh Hoa, Vinh Phuoc, and Soc Trang .
