A report from Lebanon's emergency services on October 1st stated that nearly 240,000 people, mostly Syrians, have crossed the border back into their country since Israel began its offensive against what it claims are Hezbollah strongholds in Lebanon.
Specifically, the report states that among the evacuees are more than 176,000 Syrian citizens who were taking refuge in Lebanon due to the civil war, and nearly 63,500 Lebanese citizens.
Meanwhile, Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, said on the same day that more than 100,000 people had fled from Lebanon to Syria and more than 200,000 had been forced to leave their homes in southern Lebanon due to evacuation orders from the Israeli army.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned that the number of displaced people would likely increase as the Israeli army continued to issue evacuation orders in several parts of Lebanon, including 30 villages in the south. In this context, the UN Refugee Agency continues to step up its emergency response, coordinating with partners to deploy urgent humanitarian aid and protect displaced people in Lebanon.
In a separate report, the Lebanese Ministry of Health announced on October 1 that Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon over the past 24 hours had killed 55 people and injured 156.
Given the unstable security situation in Lebanon, many countries are planning to evacuate their citizens. The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on October 1st that it will assist its citizens in leaving Lebanon in the coming days, using both military aircraft and potentially commercial planes, as well as contacting other countries to arrange rescue flights, as many airlines have decided to suspend flights to Lebanon.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry is planning to evacuate its citizens from Lebanon by air and sea. The Ministry stated that it is currently accepting evacuation applications from citizens. It has also published guidelines regarding the evacuation of citizens from other countries via Turkey, and preparations are underway for nearly 20 countries that have requested assistance so far.
