Implemented from Q3/2023 to Q4/2025, the Satellite Hospital Project includes 3 core hospitals that coordinate and provide professional support to 9 satellite units, which are regional health centers and Nam Lien Chieu General Hospital.
The collaborative efforts focus on practical training, technology transfer, and enhanced consultations to improve the quality of medical examination and treatment at the grassroots level.
According to the Department of Health, the techniques transferred during the 2023-2025 period mainly belong to the group of essential techniques with high demand such as: gastrointestinal endoscopy, general gynecological and obstetric laparoscopic surgery, bone fixation, emergency resuscitation, neonatal care, cesarean section, prenatal diagnostic ultrasound, breast and thyroid ultrasound, palliative care for cancer…
Mastering these techniques significantly reduces unnecessary referrals, especially in the trauma, digestive, and obstetrics and pediatrics patient groups.
In satellite units such as Hai Chau, Thanh Khe, Son Tra, and Hoa Vang, the number of technology transfer cases has steadily increased year by year. In 2024 alone, Thanh Khe Medical Center received 26 technology transfer cases from Da Nang Hospital; Son Tra Medical Center 18 cases; Lien Chieu Medical Center 12 cases; and Nam Lien Chieu Hospital 36 cases (the highest number in the entire system).
Several advanced techniques such as gastroscopy, colonoscopy, limb trauma management, and breast and thyroid screening have been implemented consistently and have yielded clear benefits for urban and suburban residents.
Alongside technology transfer, practical training activities at core hospitals were implemented synchronously, enabling 80% of satellite units to proactively apply the techniques they had received.
The rate of technical implementation according to the targets for the entire period reached a positive level: Nam Lien Chieu Hospital achieved 57.1%; Hai Chau Health Center 33.3%; Thanh Khe Health Center 40.7%; Son Tra Health Center 66.7%; Cam Le Health Center achieved 100%. The referral rate decreased sharply: Nam Lien Chieu Hospital from 93% to 29% (a decrease of 68.8%); Son Tra Health Center decreased by 72.7%; Ngu Hanh Son Health Center decreased by 61.5%.

Dr. Tran Thanh Thuy, Director of the Department of Health, affirmed that in the coming time, the sector will continue to strengthen training programs and technology transfer; enhance two-way consultations; invest in medical infrastructure in new areas after administrative unit mergers; aiming to improve the quality of healthcare and ensure that people have access to medical services at the grassroots level.
