The United Nations Population Fund estimates that Ukraine's population has decreased by more than 10 million people, and population stabilization will depend on an end to hostilities with Russia.

Ukrainian refugees sought refuge in Poland in 2022.

The Kyiv Independent reported on October 23rd, citing Florence Bauer, regional director of the Eastern Europe and Central Asia branch of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), that Ukraine's population has decreased by more than 10 million since the conflict began in 2014. In addition to the population decline, the number of refugees has increased to 6.7 million.

"The birth rate has fallen sharply and is now at around 1 child per woman, one of the lowest in the world ," Bauer said at a press conference in Geneva, Switzerland, on October 22.

According to the United Nations, Ukraine's birth rate is currently the lowest in Europe.

Refugees make up a large portion of Ukraine's declining population, along with war casualties as another factor. "It's difficult to get an exact number, but estimates range from tens of thousands of casualties," Bauer said.

Ukraine's population was 37.441 million as of January 1, 2024, but it is projected to decline further in the coming years. In July, the United Nations projected that the country's population would fall to 15.3 million by 2100.

Ukraine and UNFPA have collaborated on developing a national demographic strategy for Ukraine, Bauer said. This strategy focuses on human capital rather than simply trying to increase birth rates.

According to Bauer, the path to population stability in Ukraine depends on ending the hostilities.

Russia is also facing a demographic crisis, with a projected population decline of approximately 7 million people over the next two decades.

In another development, British Defence Secretary Luke Pollard wrote on social media on October 23 that more than 200 Ukrainian pilots have been trained in the UK.

Russia's advance near strategic markets is causing concern in Ukraine's steel industry.

"Today I attended the graduation ceremony of the newest pilots from the Royal Air Force training program. These pilots will soon be flying Ukraine's F-16s. Britain will stand with Ukraine for as long as it is needed," he wrote.

Ukrainian pilots have been receiving training in the UK since September 2023.

In another move to support Ukraine, the office of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on October 23 that the UK would provide $155 million in maritime aid to Ukraine. In addition, London will seek further partners to jointly distribute hundreds of drones and surveillance radars to protect the "grain corridor" in the Black Sea.
