Contribute to solving challenges in the network environment

A young face from Phenikaa University – Dr. Nguyen Xuan Tung has just put his name on the list of outstanding researchers. His latest work was published in IEEE Communications Surveys & Tutorials, the world's leading journal in the field of Information and Communication Technology with Impact Factor 46.7.

Dr. Nguyen Xuan Tung's work is titled “Graph Neural Networks for Next-Generation IoT: Recent Advances and Open Challenges”. The work aims to address complex challenges in managing and optimizing the Internet of Things (IoT), especially in the next-generation network environment.

In the paper, the authors have comprehensively systematized the way GNN is applied to handle problems with graph-like input data, which reflects the natural structure of wireless networks. Thanks to that, GNN shows a clear advantage over traditional optimization methods, which are often based on flat data and have difficulty fully exploiting the relationships between components in the system.

The study also extends the analysis of GNN applications to key technologies such as Massive MIMO, Reconfigurable Smart Surfaces (RIS), Terahertz (THz) communications, Mobile Edge Computing (MEC), and Ultra Low Latency Reliable Communications (URLLC). In particular, the paper also points out the risks from adversarial attacks and suggests defense mechanisms to secure the next generation of IoT systems.

Not stopping at the present, the project also points out directions for integrating GNN with future technologies such as integrated sensor and communication (ISAC), satellite-air-ground-sea integrated network (SAGSIN) and quantum computing. These are new fields but promise to create a major breakthrough in building a smart, efficient, safe and sustainable IoT ecosystem.

This success demonstrates the outstanding research capacity of Dr. Nguyen Xuan Tung, a typical young face in the field of information technology at Phenikaa. With their efforts and desire to conquer knowledge, young scientists like Dr. Tung are contributing to affirming the research brand of Phenikaa University, bringing Vietnamese knowledge far and wide, integrating with the global scientific flow.

Competitive capacity on par with the world's leading research groups

Another important milestone in Phenikaa University's scientific research activities has just been recognized at the School of Information Technology. The work of Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Van Canh and his colleagues has been accepted for publication at NeurIPS 2025, the world's leading prestigious international conference in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML).

NeurIPS (Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems) was founded in 1987, ranked A* according to CORE standards, regularly gathering top 1 universities in the world such as MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Oxford and leading technology corporations. With H-index 371 (according to Google Scholar), NeurIPS is considered the “Oscar in AI and Machine Learning”, where most of the fundamental breakthroughs of AI/ML in the past decade are introduced.

In 2025, NeurIPS received more than 21,500 papers from AI research groups around the world but accepted only about 24.5% of the papers, reflecting the fierce competition and the unique value of each selected work.

At NeurIPS 2025, the research team of Associate Professor Dr. Pham Van Canh announced the work “Hephaestus: Mixture Generative Modeling with Energy Guidance for Large-scale QoS Degradation”. “Hephaestus” is a new artificial intelligence model that flexibly combines approximation algorithms, generative AI, reinforcement learning and energy models to solve an important problem in network science: Quality-of-Service Degradation (QoSD). This is a major challenge in large-scale network system management, directly related to the efficiency and reliability of digital services.

The work not only demonstrates outstanding experimental advantages but also has profound theoretical value, opening up a new research direction on the application of AI in complex combinatorial optimization problems. This achievement affirms Phenikaa University's international research position, and at the same time demonstrates its competitiveness on par with the world's leading groups.

Associate Professor Dr. Pham Van Canh is currently a lecturer at the School of Information Technology, Phenikaa University and Head of the ORLab (Operational Research Laboratory) research group. Associate Professor Dr. Canh is known as one of the outstanding young scientists in the fields of AI, machine learning and optimization. With the orientation of "theory linked to application", Associate Professor Dr. Canh and the ORLab research group not only focus on pioneering academic issues but also focus on solving practical problems, from network system management, large-scale data to optimization in industry and life. The combination of passion for science, international experience and dedication has helped him build ORLab into a dynamic young research group, continuously making its mark in the academic community.

Associate Professor Canh’s colleagues are members of the ORLab research group – a strong research group in large-scale system optimization. ORLab has shaped its own identity with a focus on AI, optimization, and large-scale system research. These publications demonstrate that ORLab not only focuses on academic quality and pioneering in theory, but also aims to solve practical problems, serving social and technological development in the new period.
