Candidates sit waiting for the exam to begin at the Hanoi University of Science and Technology exam center, morning session, June 10th.

Nearly 7,000 candidates took the exam at 17 testing locations, from Da Nang northward. In Hanoi, there were 10 testing locations, including Hanoi University of Technology and 6 other universities and academies. Testing locations outside the province included the University of Technology under Da Nang University (Da Nang), Vinh University (Nghe An), Hong Duc University (Thanh Hoa), Nam Dinh University of Technology and Education (Nam Dinh), Hung Yen University of Technology and Education (Hung Yen), Vietnam Maritime University (Hai Phong), and the Center for Examination and Quality Assurance under Thai Nguyen University (Thai Nguyen).

Candidates were divided into two exam sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. In the morning session, 4,816 candidates registered, and 4,586 actually took the exam; in the afternoon session, 2,494 candidates registered, and 2,369 actually took the exam. In total, 6,955 candidates took the exam, representing 95% of the total number of registered candidates.

At the end of the morning exam session, some candidates at certain testing locations (outside of Hanoi University of Science and Technology) complained that they were seated too close together, allowing them to glance at each other's papers. In some rooms, there were even instances of candidates freely exchanging information, despite the lack of surveillance cameras. According to the candidates, although each student took a different exam, many questions were identical (though in different locations).

According to Associate Professor Nguyen Phong Dien, Deputy Director of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, the exam organizing committee received this feedback and reminded the exam centers to take measures to strengthen supervision and prevent any communication between candidates in the exam room. Regarding the exam center where candidates complained about the computers being placed too close together (Hanoi University of Water Resources), the exam was not held this afternoon. However, for the next exam period, Hanoi University of Science and Technology will require the installation of partitions at some exam centers, including the Hanoi University of Water Resources exam center.

However, Associate Professor Dien also affirmed that each student's exam is different, so any exchange of answers, if it occurs, would not benefit the candidates.

Digitizing the entire exam process

According to Associate Professor Nguyen Phong Dien, after four years of organization, the thinking skills assessment exam has been improved to enhance quality and make it more convenient for candidates. This is demonstrated by the fact that the total exam time for candidates has been reduced to 150 minutes, and all exam procedures are performed on computers. In addition, there are a range of exam question design methods and approaches that adhere to modern question rules.

To enable a large number of candidates to take the exam on computers, Hanoi University of Science and Technology used an examination platform. The university itself sought out experts and found that a company within theFPT Group had the capability to meet this requirement. The two sides spent three years researching and developing the solution.

The system utilizes Big Data, AI, and Cloud technologies to support the construction of exam questions based on modern test theory – the 2-parameter IRT model. Simultaneously, the system allows for the digitization of the entire process, from building the question bank and testing questions to online registration, payment, scheduling, and coordination with independent testing centers to organize exams in a closed-loop process.

All information regarding the candidates' exam status is displayed on the computer screen of the head of the organizing committee for the Hanoi University of Science and Technology's aptitude test.

Furthermore, the FPT.IDCheck solution for verifying chip-embedded citizen identity cards, which connects to the Ministry of Public Security's data, is integrated into the verification of candidate information with 100% accuracy. This model significantly reduces costs in organizing and participating in exams, creates a positive experience, and, importantly, provides a comprehensive classification and evaluation.

Associate Professor Nguyen Phong Dien said: "We have tested and evaluated this exam platform many times through trial exams, and we highly appreciate the quality of the questions as well as the quality of the platform. Personally, I am completely confident in it today. Besides that, the content must also be very carefully prepared to ensure the goal of classifying candidates and selecting students for university admission for the entire system."

In designing the exam, experts and schools have significantly altered the ratio of difficult to easy questions to meet two requirements: closely adhering to the high school curriculum and meeting the entrance requirements of universities.
