The Vietnamese team achieved great success at the 2024 International Junior Mathematical Olympiad (InIMC), winning 3 gold medals, 6 silver medals, 6 bronze medals, 1 honorable mention (individual award), and securing 2 championships, 1 first prize, and 2 second prizes in the team competition.
This year, the 2024 International Junior Mathematical Olympiad (InIMC) is being hosted by India, with over 600 contestants from 30 countries participating. The awards ceremony will take place on July 30th in Lucknow (Indian time).
Previously, on July 28th, the contestants took two individual and team tests. At the Key Stage 2 level (for grade 6 or younger), the test consisted of 15 written questions, to be completed in 90 minutes.
At Key Stage 3 (for grade 8 or lower), the test consists of 12 answer-based questions, 3 essay questions, and is to be completed in 120 minutes. The team competition, however, will have four students per team, working together to solve 10 problems in 70 minutes.
According to the IEG Education Development Fund, 16 out of 17 Vietnamese students participating in the competition won individual awards, including 3 gold medals, 6 silver medals, 6 bronze medals, and 1 honorable mention.
At the level for 8th grade students, Nguyen Dang Khanh (Newton Secondary and High School) excellently won the gold medal.
At the level for 6th graders, two students won gold medals: Nguyen Phong Chau (Newton 5 Secondary School) and Nguyen Duc Minh ( Hanoi - Amsterdam Specialized Secondary and High School).
Notably, student Nguyen Phong Chau achieved 140/150 points, the highest score in the entire Key Stage 2 level, surpassing many contestants from teams strong in mathematics such as the US (with a contestant achieving a highest score of 130) and China (with a contestant achieving 120 points).
In the team competition, the Vietnamese team excelled, winning 2 championships, 1 first place, and 2 second places.
Last year, Vietnam had 14 out of 17 students win awards, including 2 gold medals, 7 silver medals, 5 bronze medals, and 2 honorable mentions. This year, the team excelled, surpassing many countries and ranking among the top teams out of all participating nations.
Since 2011 , Vietnam has participated in the X+IMC competition. In 2015, the Ministry of Education and Training officially recognized this competition and allowed Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for Gifted Students to form a team to represent Vietnam.
In 2021, authorized by the International Competition Organizing Committee (IMC), the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, together with the IEG Education Development Fund, organized the selection of a team from schools in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City . Students selected for the team had to go through two rounds of selection, followed by six weeks of training to prepare them for the competition.
The IMC exam questions are proposed by participating countries and selected by a panel of experts comprising experienced international judges and three judges from the host country.
