
Long Thanh Commune, Dong Nai Province was established on the basis of merging 4 administrative units: Binh Son Commune, Loc An Commune, Long An Commune and Long Thanh Town (old Long Thanh District) with an area of 130.12km2, population of over 93,000 people, Long Thanh became one of the large-scale administrative units of the province, holding an important position in the development strategy of Dong Nai. This is a locality with distinct advantages compared to many other localities, creating a foundation for breakthroughs in the new period.
Long Thanh is located near the center of the Southern Key Economic Zone, about 40km from the center of Ho Chi Minh City, adjacent to the dynamic industrial parks of Nhon Trach and the international port cluster Phuoc An - Cai Mep.
It is the convergence point of many important highways and beltways such as Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay, Bien Hoa - Vung Tau, Ben Luc - Long Thanh, Ring Road 3 and Ring Road 4, creating favorable conditions for inter-regional and international connections. This location is not only convenient for transportation, but also places Long Thanh in a strategic urban chain of the Southeast region, closely linked to the overall development of the whole region.
Long Thanh is oriented to develop on 3 breakthrough pillars: forming a multimodal logistics center, connecting air - sea - road, linked with ICD, cold storage, distribution center, creating momentum for Long Thanh to reach international level.

Identifying Long Thanh airport urban area as the development core of Dong Nai province, in 2014, Dong Nai province organized a competition for "General planning ideas for Long Thanh airport urban area and surrounding areas".
In January 2025, the Provincial People's Committee issued a decision approving the results of the competition for ideas for the master plan of Long Thanh Airport and its surrounding areas. Accordingly, the plan of the consortium of the National Institute of Architecture - Nihon Sekkei, Inc (Japan) - Coninco Construction Technology, Equipment and Inspection Consulting Joint Stock Company (VIAR-NS-Coninco consortium) won first prize.
According to the first prize winning proposal of the competition, Long Thanh Airport Urban Area is shaped to develop in the direction of Aerotropolis, a development model with airport urban areas as the center of regional economic growth, expanding beyond the boundaries of airport cities. Along with that, Long Thanh Airport Urban Area and Ho Chi Minh City Urban Area will combine to become a twin city model cooperating with each other, taking advantage of their strengths to create resonance.
Dong Nai Province Department of Construction said that, based on the results of the competition, the department and the consulting consortium have implemented the preparation and submission to the Provincial People's Committee for approval of the budget estimate, and negotiated to reach an agreement to sign the consulting contract.
The Long Thanh Urban Master Plan will be the basis for developing zoning plans to attract investment. In the context of Long Thanh Airport Phase 1 being prepared for operation, it is urgent to speed up the planning process to attract investment projects to serve the exploitation of this airport.

Dong Nai Province Department of Construction added that according to the approved planning task, the scope of Long Thanh urban master plan is the entire administrative boundary of the old Long Thanh district.
However, after implementing the 2-level local government model, the scope of the Long Thanh urban master plan research has changed to include 2 communes Thua Duc and Xuan Duong of the old Cam My district. Therefore, the Department of Construction proposed to adjust the scope of the Long Thanh urban master plan research to include the entire administrative boundary of the old Long Thanh district and add 2 communes Thua Duc and Xuan Duong of the old Cam My district.
Chairman of Dong Nai Provincial People's Committee Vo Tan Duc said that the preparation, submission for appraisal and approval of the Long Thanh Urban Master Plan is very urgent. Therefore, the Department of Construction must review relevant regulations and issue a document proposing the Provincial People's Committee to direct implementation in accordance with regulations. At the same time, focus on completing it to soon report to the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee and the Standing Committee of the Provincial People's Committee.
Dong Nai Provincial People's Committee requested the Department of Construction and related units to speed up the first report of the Long Thanh Urban Master Plan to the Provincial People's Committee in October 2025.
