FPT connects Vietnamese IT community to meet and learn from Indian IT legends

On May 20, 2024, in Hanoi, Narayana Murthy, dubbed the "Bill Gates of India" and founder of Infosys, one of the world's top 3 IT services companies with a market capitalization exceeding $70 billion and over 320,000 employees, visited Vietnam for the first time. He had a packed work schedule for four days, from May 19-23. Through the connection facilitated byFPT – a top 50 IT services company in Asia – the Indian IT legend shared his experiences and inspiring stories with managers, experts, and business leaders in the IT industry, and met with Vietnamese government leaders. This event strongly affirmed the cooperative relationship between Vietnamese and Indian IT businesses, as well as Vietnam's position on the global information technology map.

The event included a dialogue between the Indian billionaire and the Vietnamese IT community, moderated by Mr. Truong Gia Binh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of FPT, which took place on the afternoon of May 20th at Hoa Lac High-Tech Park. Attendees included the Deputy Minister of Information and Communications, Bui Hoang Phuong, representatives from Vietnamese IT businesses, and experts and engineers in the IT industry. The event was organized by FPT in collaboration with the Vietnam Software and IT Services Association (VINASA). At the event, Mr. Narayana Murthy shared practical experiences in business, management, and corporate culture building, which helped him and his colleagues make Infosys a legend in the Indian IT industry. He also discussed with the Vietnamese IT community about promoting innovation in businesses, the development of new technology trends, and opportunities for the Vietnamese IT industry. Narayana Murthy is widely recognized as the "Bill Gates" of India and has a significant influence in the global IT sector. He and Infosys have made significant contributions to making India a global IT powerhouse. And currently, India continues to assert its position by playing a crucial role in providing resources for global engineering research and development. According to a recent study by the National Association of Indian Software Engineers (NASSCOM) and Boston Consulting Group, India will emerge as a leading nation in the global engineering research and development (ER&D) market, particularly in the software, automotive, and semiconductor sectors, with a 22% market share by 2030.

Vietnam is a “unique” country, Narayana Murthy asserted, recently highlighting Vietnam's emergence as a global technology destination, reflecting the country's commitment and investment. He also praised the courage, hard work, discipline, creativity, and ambition of generations of Vietnamese people. Thanks to these qualities, in the next 20 years, Vietnam will soon become one of the leading developed countries in Asia and one of the fastest-growing countries in the world. “Vietnam's GDP has now reached $4,300 per capita and will continue to grow faster than most economies in the world. I believe Vietnam will bring prosperity to its people faster than most countries,” he said. He also affirmed that businesses like FPT will help Vietnam realize its national potential. “After 24 years of globalization, FPT reached $1 billion in IT services revenue from overseas markets in 2023, and Infosys also achieved the same feat in a similar timeframe. Therefore, I am confident that FPT will reach the next milestone, $2 billion in IT services from overseas markets, much faster, with immense determination, courage, and relentless effort. FPT is and will contribute significantly to Vietnam's future growth,” Mr. Narayana Murthy emphasized.

Sharing his thoughts on Mr. Narayana Murthy's statement, Mr. Truong Gia Binh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of FPT, said, "India and Infosys have inspired FPT and Vietnam. 24 years ago, FPT went to India to learn how to make Vietnam a software powerhouse. And it was Narayana Murthy who inspired us with absolute confidence that Vietnam is a special country and that Vietnam can develop software for the world." In 1998, after becoming Vietnam's number one IT company, FPT decided to step out of its comfort zone, determined to venture into the global market with a strategic direction of exporting software to bring Vietnamese intelligence to the world's digital technology map. To go far, we must go together. FPT took the lead, gathering domestic software companies to jointly bring Vietnamese intelligence abroad, creating happiness and contributing to national prosperity. In 2002, the Vietnam Software Association (now the Vietnam Software and IT Services Association - VINASA) was established, happily venturing global with the unwavering determination that "if the Indians can do it, the Vietnamese can do it too." At that time, India, a software industry powerhouse, had software and IT services revenue 200 times greater than Vietnam's. After 20 years, Vietnam has narrowed that gap by more than 10 times. The association is aiming to bring the software and IT services industry to a revenue of $50 billion by 2030 and $150 billion by 2045. Three Key Factors for Business Success: Sales - Financial Control - Human Resources. Based on Infosys's practical experience, founder Narayana Murthy believes that to succeed, along with choosing high-demand sectors, businesses need to ensure three crucial elements: Sales, Financial Control, and Human Resources. “If we don't sell, the company won't have revenue, and without revenue, the company can't operate. Once we have revenue, we must ensure all expenses are controlled. Try to spend less than the company has. And another important thing is to ensure the operation of all departments in the company; we need a good workforce.” According to Indian IT legend Narayana Murthy, the most important thing for a company is not generating profit, but creating jobs. He believes that creating more jobs will naturally lead to sales and profits, because that is the root of business, while sales and profits are merely consequences. Sharing the same viewpoint as the founder of Infosys, Mr. Truong Gia Binh, Chairman of the Board of Directors, stated that FPT is also doing the same, aiming to create more jobs to change the lives of young people and striving to reach the milestone of 1 million employees by 2035.

The Inspirational Story of Infosys for Vietnam's IT Industry: Starting with just $250, over four decades, Narayana Murthy transformed Infosys from an unknown company into one of India's leading IT giants with global influence. In 1999, Infosys was the first Indian company to be listed on the US Nasdaq stock exchange. In 2023, the company achieved revenues exceeding $18 billion, employed 320,000 people, operated in 50 countries worldwide, and had a market capitalization exceeding $70 billion.
