46-year-old professor becomes Principal of University of Health Sciences

The Council of Ho Chi Minh City National University has just recognized the Rector of the University of Health Sciences. That is Professor Phan Bach Thang, 46 years old, who graduated with a doctorate in Korea.

Professor Phan Bach Thang was recognized by the Council of the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City as the Rector of the University of Health Sciences .

This afternoon (March 7th), the Council of the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City held its 24th meeting of the 4th term. At the meeting, the members of the Council of the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City voted to recognize Professor Phan Bach Thang, Director of the Center for Research on Nanostructured and Molecular Materials, as the Rector of the University of Health Sciences (Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City).

Previously, the Standing Committee of the Party Committee of the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City had carried out the procedure to transfer Professor Phan Bach Thang to work at the University of Health Sciences and appointed him as the Rector of this university, while also continuing to hold the position of Director of the Center for Research on Nanostructured and Molecular Materials until a new personnel is appointed.

Professor Phan Bach Thang was born in 1979 in Thai Binh province . He received his PhD in Advanced Materials Science and Technology from Sungkyunkwan University (South Korea) in 2009. He was then appointed professor of physics in 2022.

Professor Phan Bach Thang has extensive management experience from departmental and faculty levels to head of affiliated units from 2009 to the present. In his professional work, Professor Phan Bach Thang also has considerable experience in training, leading and participating in scientific research projects, and has numerous scientific publications and inventions related to the field of health sciences.

To date, he has published over 200 articles in SCIE journals (10 international publications in journals listed in the Nature index); co-authored 2 international patents (USA, South Korea); and edited 1 monograph…

Previously, in July 2024, the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM) issued a decision appointing the interim Board of Directors of the University of Health Sciences – the 8th member university recently upgraded from the Faculty of Medicine (VNU-HCM). According to this decision, Associate Professor Dr. Vu Hai Quan, Director of VNU-HCM, was appointed concurrently as the Rector of the University of Health Sciences. The interim Board of Directors of the University of Health Sciences will perform the functions and duties of managing and operating the university's activities in accordance with the law until a new decision is made.

The Prime Minister has decided to establish the University of Health Sciences on the basis of the Faculty of Medicine under the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City in June 2024. The Faculty of Medicine (Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City), established in 2009, is a training institution for health science disciplines, following a school-hospital model, closely integrating training with scientific research and providing healthcare services.
