This morning (October 14), a representative of Professor Lam Quang Thiep's family said he passed away at 9:00 p.m. on October 13 at the hospital due to old age and poor health.

Mr. Lam Quang Thiep was born in 1939 in Hoa Vang district, Quang Nam province (now Da Nang city).

He served as Director of the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam (1988-1997) and as Assistant Minister of Education and Training.

As one of the pioneer scientists in the field of geophysics in Vietnam, Professor Lam Quang Thiep founded the Department of Geophysics at the Faculty of Physics, Hanoi University of Science in 1962 - this is the first department of this major in Vietnam. He once held the role of Head of the Department.

He graduated with a degree in physics from Hanoi University in 1961 and then taught at the same school as Hanoi National University for more than 20 years. From 1975 to 1980, he taught at Ho Chi Minh City University.

In 1968, he successfully defended his doctoral thesis at Moscow State University (former Soviet Union) and continued to defend his doctoral thesis in 1982 here, specializing in geophysics. He was awarded the title of Associate Professor in 1980 and Professor in 1991.

Besides teaching, Professor Thiep also presides over many research topics serving basic investigations in the fields of geology and petroleum in Vietnam.

In particular, he and a colleague invented a method of geological exploration using electric fields - called " Unified symmetrical and bipolar electric depth measurement method ". This method was highly appreciated at Moscow State University and was patented by the Vietnamese Ministry of Science and Technology in 1989.

During his tenure as Director of the Department of Higher Education, he contributed many important innovative proposals for higher education, such as: reforming the diploma system, innovating the university organization model in line with the market economy and international integration, applying the credit-based training system, improving the university entrance exam with modern technologies of measurement and evaluation in education.

He is one of the leading experts in Vietnam in the field of higher education management and measurement and evaluation in education. This is a very new field of science in our country, and he has written many books to disseminate knowledge to teachers and education managers.

In the 2001-2002 academic year, he participated in the Fulbright Scholar Exchange Program of the United States and served as a visiting professor at the State University of New York at Buffalo.

After retirement, Professor, Doctor of Science Lam Quang Thiep continues to be active in the field of education, as an advisor to the Association of Vietnamese Universities and Colleges.

He is also a specialist contributor to Tuoi Tre newspaper, with many dedicated articles on higher education.
