Help students quit using their phones and be more excited about going to school

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên02/01/2025

Pleiku High School (Pleiku City, Gia Lai Province) will implement a 'no-phone break' model starting from the 2024-2025 school year, helping students connect with each other and feel more enthusiastic about coming to school through arts, sports, and other activities.

At the beginning of each class, all students at Pleiku High School put their phones in specially designed glass lockers, which are checked and managed by the class monitor throughout the lesson. The school has 30 classrooms, each equipped with a glass locker for students to store their phones.

Before putting their phones in the locker, students turn off the ringer to avoid disrupting class. When they need to contact their families, students will be assisted by teachers or class monitors, and parents can also call the homeroom teacher. Thanks to this model, students are less distracted during class and have more time to interact with friends and teachers.

Students come to school with positive feelings when they don't use their phones.

According to Ms. Le Thi Thanh Xuan, Secretary of the Youth Union of Pleiku High School, in the past, the use of mobile phones by students to play games and browse social media was quite common. Therefore, the school collaborated with parents to launch the "Turn off your phone, increase connectivity" campaign to help students develop good habits and create a more focused and effective learning environment.

To encourage students to "quit" using their phones during recess, the school has organized cultural and artistic activities by the school's Culture and Arts Club. These programs take place every Thursday and Saturday in the schoolyard after the first class. In addition, the school also organizes activities such as folk dancing, shuttlecock playing, and will soon be adding bamboo pole dancing...

Students interact more with their friends when they don't use their phones during recess.

For students, participating in this movement is not only a challenge but also an opportunity to change habits. Bui Thu An, a student in class 12A9, shared: "At first, I was surprised when the school launched the 'Turn off your phone, increase connectivity' movement because I was used to using my phone during breaks. But after a while, I realized I focused more on studying. Instead of browsing TikTok, Facebook, etc., my classmates chatted with friends or participated in group activities. It felt much more fun. Especially, break time became more enjoyable when we played sports, music , etc. together. I noticed that my classmates also had a more positive attitude towards studying and came to school with more joy."

Sharing the same view, Nguyen Vu Hieu, a student in class 12A3, believes this movement is excellent, helping students reduce their phone usage time when it's not absolutely necessary. Instead of browsing social media, students can use that time to discuss assignments with their classmates. This not only helps students learn better but also improves relationships with teachers and friends.

Increase connectivity in the school environment.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Dong Hai, Vice Principal in charge of Pleiku High School, students' character is formed from self-cultivation, family, society, and school education . Each factor is important. Generations of teachers at Pleiku High School have always strived to inherit and develop traditions and work hard to improve professional quality, helping students cultivate knowledge and acquire life skills to prepare them for life after completing high school.

During recess, students exchange knowledge and chat instead of using their phones as they used to.

"The 'Turn off your phones, connect more' movement sounds easy, but implementing it is a challenge, because the school has over 2,000 students, each with their own personality. But since this movement started, students have increased their interaction with each other, creating a more positive school environment. We have many ideas to contribute to increasing that interaction. For example, we suggest students play sports during recess, and in the near future, we will establish clubs such as painting and music… to develop their emotions and abilities," Ms. Hai said.

According to Mr. Vu Van Dan, a geography teacher, since the "Turn off your phone, increase connectivity" campaign was implemented, students are less distracted during class, pay more attention, and participate more actively in discussions. Previously, there were lessons where teachers had to remind students repeatedly about phone use, but now this no longer happens.

"The important thing about this movement is not about prohibition, but about educating students' self-awareness. Not using phones doesn't mean completely eliminating technology in education. Instead, teachers should try to be more creative in their teaching methods or organize group activities to create a more lively, emotional, and creative atmosphere in teaching and learning," Mr. Dan said.
