Vietnam's national karate team head coach, Duong Hoang Long, commented: "Dieu Ly is a young talent who is showing good potential and has accumulated experience through each tournament, so the coaching staff is focusing on training her to help her best develop her abilities."
Fighter Nguyen Thi Dieu Ly.
At the age of 20, Nguyen Thi Dieu Ly has achieved significant success. Recalling 2022, Nguyen Thi Dieu Ly caused a major surprise with her gold medal at the World Junior Karate Championships. Much praise for the young athlete appeared in the media. However, the female karate athlete from the Army was quite reserved, stating that her results came from the diligent preparation of her coach combined with her own determination to compete. Nevertheless, Nguyen Thi Dieu Ly's athletic talent and ability to achieve professional success continue to be affirmed in karate.
In 2024, Nguyen Thi Dieu Ly won two gold medals (women's 55kg U.21 age group, team kumite championship) and one bronze medal (women's 55kg team championship) at the 2024 Southeast Asian Karate Championships. Following this, Dieu Ly was a key member of the Vietnamese karate team registered for the 2024 Asian Championships, where she and her teammates won the gold medal in the women's team kumite event. This achievement secured the Vietnamese women's kumite team their first direct qualification to the 2024 World Team Karate Championships. At this competition, Dieu Ly and her teammates experienced high-level professional matches, effectively accumulating valuable experience. Given her young age and impressive performance, it's understandable why the Vietnamese karate coaching staff is being very cautious in preparing Nguyen Thi Dieu Ly to the best possible professional level.
In 2025, the Vietnamese karate team aims for a high achievement at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 33), held in Thailand. Having never participated in the SEA Games before, Dieu Ly is highly determined to be present at Southeast Asia's biggest sporting event. Coach Duong Hoang Long analyzed that the opportunity for all Vietnamese karate athletes to compete at SEA Games 33 is equal, and the athlete with the best form will be selected. Regarding her professional skills, Nguyen Thi Dieu Ly has stated that her experience as a military athlete helps her remain calm in the face of any opponent on the mat. Above all, the encouragement and experience shared by her older sister, Nguyen Thi Ngoan, a female karate athlete from the Army, will help Nguyen Thi Dieu Ly aim for the best possible results. “I hope to have the opportunity to participate in SEA Games 33 to continue showcasing my skills and strive for a good result for Vietnamese karate,” Dieu Ly shared.
