Dutch police confirmed on January 1st that more than 200 people had been arrested on New Year's Eve in riots across the country, including dozens of police officers who were injured.
Speaking on the NOS television channel, a police spokesperson said that police in several cities had been attacked with fireworks and bricks. According to the spokesperson, it was a night of serious incidents and "unacceptable" violence.
Police in Rotterdam confirmed that more than 100 cars and other vehicles were set ablaze, while in Amsterdam, The Hague, and several other cities, riot police were deployed to disperse violent crowds.
Riot control teams were also deployed across the country to assist firefighters who were attacked with fireworks as they tried to extinguish numerous fires.
Meanwhile, in the city of Haarlem, a 19-year-old man was killed in a fireworks attack just before the New Year's Eve countdown.
