The local police assisted in helping students cross the river.
On the morning of September 3rd, schools in Luong Minh commune began the new school year. Hundreds of primary and secondary school students will be attending classes in two sessions, eating and sleeping at school.
At Luong Minh Ethnic Boarding Primary School, according to Principal Nguyen Van Thanh, 161 students whose homes are in six remote villages currently have to cross a river to get to school. This is because the floods at the end of July swept away the Xop Mat suspension bridge - the only suspension bridge connecting the center of Luong Minh commune with the remote villages.

With the bridge gone, on the first day of school, more than 160 elementary school students from the villages of Ca Moong, Xop Chao, and other outlying villages such as Xop Mat, Minh Phuong, Ban La, and Ban Coi had to cross the river to get to school. In particular, in Ca Moong and Xop Chao villages, parents and elementary school students had to walk more than 40 minutes from the village to the boat landing, then travel by motorboat for nearly an hour to reach the center of Luong Minh commune. From the commune center, they had to travel by motorbike across the Xop Mat suspension bridge for another 30 minutes to reach the school. This school year, students from Ca Moong and Xop Chao villages had to cross the river twice because the suspension bridge had collapsed.

Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh, Principal of Luong Minh Ethnic Boarding Primary School, added: On the morning of September 3rd, students and parents were assisted by police officers, commune officials, and village officials in mobilizing additional canoes and small boats to cross the river, as the entire commune only has two small motorboats.
According to regulations, students at Luong Minh Primary School attend school on Monday mornings, eat and stay at the school's boarding facility, and are allowed to go home for two days on Saturday and Sunday. However, due to landslides and the loss of the suspension bridge, Luong Minh Primary School held a parent meeting on September 3rd to find solutions to ensure the safety of the children when they come to school.

Following the meeting, the school and parents agreed that, for the time being, children would stay at school for two weeks at a time before going home. This would reduce the number of trips parents make to and from school, and the children would also reduce the number of times they have to cross the river to get to school. As for the teachers on duty, they also agreed to take turns staying at school on weekends with the students, taking care of them while they are there.
Finding solutions to help students get to school more safely.
Currently, in addition to 161 primary school students, secondary school students from the four villages in the inner region (Cham Puong, Minh Thanh, Minh Tien, and Dua) also have to cross the river to get to school in the commune center, which is very dangerous, especially in bad weather.

Mr. Nguyen Van Thang, Secretary of the Party Committee of Luong Minh commune, said that in the long term, the most effective solution is to build a solid bridge across the river. The new school year has begun, and it is also the rainy season, making it risky for students to regularly cross the river by ferry to get to school. Therefore, in the coming time, the commune plans to mobilize the people, along with the local Party committee and government, to open dirt roads and clear bottlenecks so that people can travel and children from the four outlying villages can go to school without having to cross the river by ferry.
Students in the two villages of Ca Moong and Xop Chao still have to travel by boat from their villages to the commune center.

Specifically, currently, from the outer villages to the school in Dua Ngoai village via the Xop Mat suspension bridge (which collapsed after the flood), there is also a road that goes around through La, Minh Thanh, Minh Tien, and Minh Thanh villages, passing through approximately 500 households. The planned road is about 10km long, passing through people's production areas, of which about 4km has already been built, and 6km needs leveling.

“Despite the difficulties, the commune is determined to mobilize all resources and assistance to create the best conditions for students to attend school and to reassure parents. It is expected that the road construction will begin in October, with efforts to complete it before any unfavorable rain or wind occurs,” said Mr. Nguyen Van Thang, Secretary of the Party Committee of Luong Minh commune.
