Many farming households in Xuyen Moc district ( Ba Ria - Vung Tau province) have invested in developing specialty livestock models - opening up a new direction to increase income.

In 2023, when he started raising bamboo rats, Mr. Pham Thanh Hai, Phuoc An quarter, Phuoc Buu town (Xuyen Moc district, Ba Ria-Vung Tau province) could not help but worry because this model was quite new. In Xuyen Moc district, there were only a few small-scale households. Thanks to actively researching and mastering the care process, the bamboo rats developed well and could be sold at the end of this year.

Introducing the bamboo rats being raised, Mr. Hai said that the farm has two types of bamboo rats: Vietnamese and imported, of which the Thai peach-cheeked bamboo rat is more popular in the market.

Bamboo rats are considered a specialty so the price is quite high, more than 13 million VND/pair of breeding rats, and commercial bamboo rats are from 900 - 1.2 million VND/kg. However, the demand for purchasing and consuming bamboo rats is increasing. Therefore, he decided to choose the direction of raising bamboo rats, multiplying the herd to supply breeding rats to the market.

“After visiting many large bamboo rat breeding facilities in the Central Highlands provinces, I decided to conduct a trial breeding program first to see if the bamboo rat can adapt to the local climate conditions before expanding the scale.

Initially, I bought 20 pairs of bamboo rats (about 0.5 kg/rat) to raise. After only 7 months of care, the bamboo rats gave birth. In early 2024, the Farmers' Association introduced me to borrow 90 million VND from the District Social Policy Bank. I expanded my barn and bought more bamboo rats," Mr. Hai added.

The Thai peach-cheeked bamboo rat breeding model of Mr. Pham Thanh Hai, Phuoc An quarter, Phuoc Buu town (Xuyen Moc district, Ba Ria-Vung Tau province) has a lot of potential.

Currently, Mr. Hai's bamboo rat farm has about a hundred large and small rats, including 30 breeding pairs of bamboo rats. Many customers have known about the facility and contacted to place orders in advance. Mr. Hai is focusing on multiplying the herd, aiming to provide bamboo breeds and commercial bamboo rats. Every day, he goes to cut bamboo in the garden and plants more elephant grass to proactively source food on the spot for the bamboo rats, thereby saving a lot of costs in raising them.

In Xuyen Moc district, many models of specialty livestock have appeared such as castrated roosters (Hoa Hiep commune); raising deer for velvet antlers, raising stingless bees (Binh Chau commune); raising civets (Phuoc Thuan commune); raising Thai peach-cheeked bamboo rats (Phuoc Buu town); raising hybrid wild boars (Bung Rieng and Bong Trang communes)...

According to the assessment of livestock farmers, local specialty livestock have good resistance, are not picky about food, are easy to raise, and adapt easily to many living conditions. Developing the raising of specialty livestock brings economic value many times higher than other types of livestock.

However, if the specialty livestock model is developed spontaneously, without connection to the product consumption market, the economic efficiency will not be high, even leading to losses.

Therefore, in recent years, along with the development of herd size, most livestock households have focused on linking and finding stable consumption markets for specialty livestock products. Up to now, the whole district has maintained 107 professional associations/1,212 members and 17 professional branches/230 members.

“The replication and development of specialty livestock models has changed people's awareness of converting breeds to increase economic value and income.

At the same time, it is also the basis for moving towards brand building, linking production with local tourism , contributing to shifting the livestock structure, bringing higher economic efficiency to farmers," said Mr. Dinh Xuan Dau, Vice Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Xuyen Moc district, Ba Ria-Vung Tau province.
