According to the National Power Development Plan, adjusted Power Plan VIII, Quang Tri province is oriented to develop power sources with a total capacity of about 14,475MW by 2030 and in the period 2031-2035, it is expected to add an additional 3,872.8MW.

This is a picture showing Quang Tri's long-term vision and strategy in promoting natural advantages, especially wind and solar energy, in line with the Government 's orientation of reducing carbon emissions and developing green and sustainable energy.

According to Director of the Department of Industry and Trade Ho Xuan Hoe: “To realize the goal of becoming the energy center of the Central region, the province is promoting the development of both renewable energy sources, thermal power and transmission systems; gradually completing the energy infrastructure in accordance with the direction of the adjusted Power Plan VIII.

Up to now, the province has 1,459.8MW of power generation capacity officially put into commercial operation, including: 21 wind power plant projects with a total capacity of 994MW; hydropower projects with a total capacity of 181.5MW; 4 ground-mounted solar power projects with a total capacity of 159MW (equivalent to 199MWp); 1,204 rooftop solar power systems (RTS) with a total capacity of 126.7MW.

This figure clearly demonstrates the effectiveness of attracting investment and the rapid implementation of energy projects in the province. This is also an important foundation for Quang Tri to affirm its role in the national energy map."

Quang Tri is located in an area with high solar radiation and stable sea breezes, so it has ideal conditions for developing wind and solar power. The province is also considered by the Government and the Ministry of Industry and Trade as a bright spot in the clean energy transition.

In addition to natural potential, over the past time, the Provincial People's Committee has always accompanied and had policies in supporting site clearance, investing in transmission infrastructure, and reforming administrative procedures to attract large domestic and foreign investors.

Currently, in the province, there are power source and transmission grid projects that have been granted investment policies and are being implemented with an operational schedule until 2030, including: Regarding coal-fired thermal power, there is the Quang Trach 1 Thermal Power Plant project invested by Vietnam Electricity Group, with a capacity of 1,403 MW, supplying about 8.5 billion kWh per year. Currently, the project is under urgent construction to burn oil for a trial run on August 19, 2025, and is expected to be commercially operational in May 2026.

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) and natural gas thermal power projects include: LNG Hai Lang 1 with a capacity of 1,500MW, supplying about 9.75 billion kWh/year, expected to be commercially operated in the 2028-2029 period; LNG Quang Trach 2 with a capacity of 1,500MW, is preparing a feasibility study report, expected to be operational in 2030; Quang Tri Combined Cycle Gas Thermal Power Plant with a capacity of 340MW, expected to be operational in 2030.

Regarding wind power, currently in the province, there are 11 projects that have been granted investment policies and are being implemented with a total capacity of 424MW; of which, 3 projects with a total capacity of 108MW will be put into operation by the end of the third quarter of 2025, the remaining projects will be put into operation in 2026 and 2027.

“Regarding hydropower, there is the La Trong project with a capacity of 22MW, expected to be operational in October 2025 and 7 small projects with a total capacity of 93MW under construction, expected to be completed in 2026 and 2027. Waste-to-energy has a power generation component project of the Waste Treatment Plant and Organic Mineral Fertilizer, with a capacity of 17MW. This is a bright spot in energy-environment integration in the province.

Along with the power source, Quang Tri is synchronously deploying the transmission system, ensuring the release of capacity of large power projects, such as: Quang Tri 500kV Transformer Station Project and connecting line in Dien Sanh commune, expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2025; Lao Bao - Quang Tri 2 500kV project cluster expected to be completed in 2027; My Thuy 110kV-63MVA transformer station and Dien Sanh-My Thuy 110kV line expected to be completed and energized in the fourth quarter of 2026", emphasized Director of the Department of Industry and Trade Ho Xuan Hoe.
