The incident occurred at 3:50 a.m. on June 21 on a section of Line 13 under construction by China Railway Second Group Co., Ltd., after two underground water pipes exploded, causing a 12-meter-long section of the line to collapse, according to the city's subway management agency.

Water supply to the pipelines was cut off after the collapse, while the affected roads were closed. On the official weibo page of Chengdu Railway Construction Company, no casualties were reported in the accident.

State broadcaster CCTV aired footage of the sinkhole. Emergency workers told local media that the sinkhole would not pose a safety risk to surrounding buildings.

The area is popular with tourists who come to see the native ginkgo trees. Chengdu Metro Line 13 is scheduled to open in 2025 with 21 metro stations.

China has been steadily requiring a number of industries from mining, trucking to construction to enforce stricter safety standards.
