Hue officially becomes a city directly under the Central Government

Hue - With the determination and efforts of the entire political system and the consensus of the people, Hue officially became a centrally-governed city from today, January 1, 2025.

On the morning of January 1, 2025, the Resolution on the establishment of Hue City under the Central Government officially took effect. Thua Thien Hue Province became Hue City under the Central Government and is the 6th centrally-governed city of Vietnam. Other centrally-governed cities include: Hanoi Capital, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang City, Can Tho City and Hai Phong City.

Previously, on the evening of December 29, 2024, at Ngo Mon Square, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man presented the National Assembly's Resolution on the establishment of Hue City under the Central Government to the leaders of Thua Thien Hue province, marking a historical milestone of this locality.

Thus, from January 1, 2025, Hue City under the Central Government was established on the basis of the entire natural area of ​​4,947.11 km² and population of 1,236,393 people of Thua Thien Hue province. Hue will have 9 district-level administrative units (DAUs) including 2 districts, 3 towns, 4 districts and 133 commune-level DAUs.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh Hieu (a resident of Hue City) shared: “After hearing the news that Hue has become a city directly under the Central Government, we are very happy. At the same time, we expect Hue to develop further and from there the lives of Hue people will become better and better.”

From the times when it did not meet the criteria to become a centrally-governed city, the authorities and people of Hue have united and made efforts to build and develop the entire Thua Thien Hue province. From an ancient land with many relics, Hue has grown to become a modern, dynamic and livable city; one of the cultural centers of Vietnam and will be the driving force for development in the region.

Over the past years, in addition to promoting urban and infrastructure development, Hue has also focused on preserving and promoting the heritage of the ancient capital. Many relics destroyed by natural disasters and wars have been successfully restored and renovated by Hue. The results achieved have demonstrated that the work of preserving and promoting the value of Hue's cultural heritage has entered a phase of stability and sustainable development.

Mr. Nguyen Van Phuong - Chairman of Hue City People's Committee said that in order to realize the goal of developing Hue towards becoming a modern, civilized, friendly, open city welcoming domestic and foreign investors, Hue will prioritize all investment resources for the goal of preserving and effectively promoting the heritage values ​​of the Ancient Capital, Hue's cultural identity, and Hue people in a sustainable manner, in the direction of "preservation goes hand in hand with development". “According to the orientation of Thua Thien Hue province when Hue city becomes a central city, priority will be given to calling for investment in key sectors such as tourism, industry, agriculture - forestry - fishery, developing marine and lagoon economy, developing heritage economy associated with tourism and cultural industry. In particular, focusing on developing heritage economy associated with tourism and cultural industry. Building the economic foundation of the city based on 3 pillars: tourism economy, heritage economy, circular economy; promoting heritage values ​​through cultural, landscape, urban and ecological tourism. Planning space so that each heritage becomes a nucleus to create development momentum. In addition, investing in developing urban areas and rural residential areas with criteria that ensure regulations, in line with the orientation of preserving and promoting heritage urban spaces, focusing on green, sustainable, smart development and having its own characteristics" - Chairman Nguyen Van Phuong emphasized.

In particular, the National Tourism Year 2025 with the theme "Hue - Ancient Capital, New Opportunities" and Hue Festival 2025 will be held in Hue. The organization of the National Tourism Year - Hue 2025 is expected to be a very important boost to help the socio-economy in general and tourism in Thua Thien Hue province in particular to flourish, creating conditions to attract resources for investment and development, building new and attractive products, contributing to creating momentum for socio-economic development of the province in 2025 and the following years.

With a series of activities and events held during the National Tourism Year and Hue Festival 2025, Hue is expected to attract about 4.8 - 5 million tourists, of which international visitors account for about 38 - 40% of total visitors; total tourism revenue reaches about 10,800 - 11,200 billion VND.

The new period will help Hue City preserve and further promote the value of the ancient capital's heritage and Hue's cultural identity, with its cultural, heritage, ecological, landscape, environmentally friendly and intelligent characteristics.
