iPhone still 'survives' after fall from height of 4,800 meters

According to BGR , Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 recently encountered a rare incident when a window and part of the fuselage were blown off in mid-air, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing. Fortunately, no one was injured, but this event was even more notable when an iPhone from the flight was found intact on the road near Beaverton (Oregon, USA).

According to Seanathan Bates, he found the Alaska Airlines passenger's iPhone on the side of the road. Incredibly, it was still in airplane mode, had 50% battery, and was open to the flight's baggage tracking website. The iPhone, protected by a case and screen protector, appeared to be unharmed after the 15,000-foot fall.

Aside from the case and screen protector, which looked like new, a broken charger was still inside the phone. Everything else, however, was in working order. A user on X (formerly Twitter) posted images showing the plane’s crash site and where the iPhone was found, which matched Bates’ account.

The scene where the iPhone 'landed' and its almost intact condition

Bates said he contacted the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which confirmed that another phone that fell from the plane was also found in working condition (but did not disclose the brand).

Based on the images, this iPhone could be an iPhone 14 Pro or an iPhone 15 model. While Apple claims Ceramic Shield technology provides the toughest display on a new iPhone, the company certainly hasn't tested it at 5,000 feet. Also, falling onto grass might have helped lessen the impact.

This unusual story is not only lucky for the passengers on the flight, but also shows the incredible durability of the iPhone. It is not clear whether this is a case of random luck or Apple's Ceramic Shield technology is really effective, but it will certainly make many people rethink the durability of smartphones.
