Justin Bieber threatens to 'strangle' Apple employee

Canadian pop star Justin Bieber has bluntly threatened to "strangle" Apple employees over an annoying messaging interface bug on the iPhone.

Apple’s design decisions are often questioned by users, especially after the company introduced major changes like the Liquid Glass interface. However, in the case of a famous singer, a small issue led to a fierce reaction on social media.

In a post on social network X on December 7, singer Justin Bieber expressed his dissatisfaction with the design of the iPhone's Messages application.

“Every time I hit the dictation button after sending a message, it beeps and cuts off my music. If this happens again, I will find the people at Apple and do a ‘rear-strangulation’ to them,” Bieber threatened.

The rear naked choke hold is a neck locking technique in which the opponent stands behind the victim, using their hands to squeeze around the neck to cut off blood supply to the brain, causing the opponent to lose consciousness.

“Even when I turn off the dictation feature, I still accidentally touch the voice recording button. The send button should not have multiple functions in the same place,” the singer continued to complain.

The issue Bieber is referring to is the microphone icon for the dictation feature in the Messages text input box. The icon starts as a microphone, then changes to a Send button as the user types text, then returns to a mic icon after the message is sent.

The location of this button is in the upper right corner of the keyboard, which is very easy for users to accidentally touch. In particular, users can easily accidentally double-click the Send button and touch the newly replaced microphone icon.

While you can turn off the dictation feature in Settings , it's replaced by a voice message recording icon—another feature that can't be turned off. Both of these features require the iPhone to record audio, which interrupts the music playing, which is exactly what Bieber found annoying.

Justin Bieber's post quickly went viral thanks to his large following. Responses poured in, including asking him to critique the Photos app and commenting on his entering the "age of product management." Others mentioned recent senior retirements at Apple.

The singer's response also attracted attention from prominent figures in the tech world. Billionaire Elon Musk retweeted the post with two fire emojis, while OpenAI's Director of Design Ian Silber bluntly invited him: "You are officially invited to our weekly design reviews."
