The American Eagle jeans advertising campaign featuring actress Sydney Sweeney has become the center of controversy on social media, with some people accusing it of carrying a hidden message of racism.
Sydney Sweeney, the star of HBO hits Euphoria and The White Lotus , is the face of the brand's fall jeans campaign. The campaign's tagline reads, "Sydney Sweeney has great jeans"—a play on "great genes."
Some viewers have said the campaign promotes "eugenics," "white supremacy," and even "neo-Nazi propaganda."
Sydney Sweeney refutes all negative views
Sydney Sweeney told People about the wave of criticism she received this year while promoting her upcoming film The Housemaid: "Honestly, I was surprised by the reaction. I got involved because I like jeans and I like the brand.
I do not support the views some have attributed to the campaign. Many have attributed motives and labels to me that are incorrect."

"Anyone who knows me knows that I am always trying to bring people together. I am against hatred and division. In the past, I chose not to respond to the press, whether positive or negative, but I recently realized that my silence on this issue only increased division, not narrowed the gap.
"I hope the new year brings more focus on what connects us, rather than what divides us," said Sydney Sweeney.
The actress spoke out for the first time about the ad campaign in an interview with GQ for its "Men of the Year" issue, published November 4.
When asked if she was surprised by the reaction to the American Eagle ad, Sydney Sweeney replied bluntly: "I just did a jeans ad. I mean, the reaction was unexpected, but I love jeans. I just wear jeans. I wear jeans and a T-shirt every day."

Despite the controversy, American Eagle said the denim line promoted by Sydney Sweeney sold well and even sold out.
In the weeks after the campaign launched on July 23, the brand sent out press emails reporting record sales, with double-digit increases in both men's and women's jeans.
According to the brand, the Sydney Jacket worn by Sydney Sweeney in the campaign sold out in a day, while the Sydney Jean – a custom Dreamy Drape version of the actress, with 100% of the profits donated to Crisis Text Line – sold out in a week.

Currently, Sydney Sweeney is busy promoting the upcoming film The Housemaid , directed by Paul Feig and adapted from Freida McFadden's 2022 bestselling novel.
She said her favorite memories on set involved bonding with co-star Amanda Seyfried.
"A special memory for me was when Amanda Seyfried crocheted me a bag and it's my favorite bag to date. She always crochets on set and makes some really cute bags. When we finished filming, she made me one.
"We are quite similar in that we always spread positive energy to everyone, from actors to crew. I hope that when the audience comes to see the movie, they will leave the theater in a state of complete shock. I want them to come back and see it again with their friends" - Sydney Sweeney said.
