Celebrities unintentionally promote the super-skinny standard
On social media, the image of the “Ozempic body” – a skinny figure, prominent collarbones, and sunken cheeks – is increasingly popular.

Many artists such as Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo appear with unusually thin appearances at events. Singer La Toya Jackson often shows off her painfully thin figure on social media, while Amy Schumer and Meghan Trainor attract attention for their drastic weight loss, revealing distinct bone lines. These images unintentionally create a new aesthetic standard, making it easy for audiences to follow.
Rib cutting and diet pill abuse
Emily James (28 years old) from San Diego (USA) spent 13,750 USD to remove 6 ribs to have a "super small" waist. However, after the surgery, she fell into a state of panic and took 7 months to recover. A year later, Emily admitted to the New York Post that she regretted this "painful but not quick" choice.
“Removing the ribs leaves organs like the liver and kidneys less protected. Just coughing hard hurts like someone punched me,” she said.

Despite the high risks, the “wasp waist” surgery still attracts many women. Recently, some clinics have promoted the RibXcar procedure (rib reconstruction) - described as a minimal intervention, fast recovery and minimal scarring. After surgery, patients must wear a shaping corset almost all day for 3 months to keep the bones in their new position.
Stevi Dee (38 years old) from Florida (USA) - who performed RibXcar after giving birth - said that this procedure requires careful consideration of health, and recommends not following invasive measures because of trends.
Psychotherapist Lesley Koeppel says that while extreme surgeries may create a sense of instant confidence, they can also lead young people to tie their self-worth to their appearance and the latest fads. “The emotional foundation behind them is often fragile,” she says.
Concerns about the trend of reckless beauty
Psychologists, nutritionists and cosmetic surgeons warn that the cult of ultra-thinness can fuel eating disorders and lead to dangerous cosmetic choices, including rib removal.

The New York Post commented that this alarming thinness is negatively affecting the way the younger generation views their bodies.
Noelle, a 12th grader in Pennsylvania (USA), said that regularly seeing celebrities lose weight dramatically on Instagram and TikTok made her question her own appearance.
“Even within my group of friends, people compare themselves to new celebrity models,” she said.
Lana (18 years old) is a freshman at Millersville University (USA). She believes that caring about the health of celebrities is not body shaming, but admits that the spread of this trend puts a lot of pressure on young people.
Warning from experts
Deb Malkoff-Cohen, a registered dietitian with more than 20 years of experience, said medications for eating disorders or diabetes should only be used as a supplement when necessary. “They can make people feel full but not eat enough, which is especially dangerous for people with a history of eating disorders,” she said.

Christina Grasso, co-founder of Chain, an organization that supports people in the fashion and entertainment industries with eating issues, said the current trend of “skinnyness” recalls the early 2000s, when the image of super-thinness was romanticized and had serious effects on mental health.
Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Walter Joseph says he has seen a surge in requests for body-slimming procedures, from rib reconstruction to cheek fat reduction. He says celebrity influence has made the ultra-thin standard dangerous for young people.
“They are public figures and easily influence young people. That inadvertently creates an unattainable beauty standard, even from a very young age,” Joseph warned.
