According to TechRadar , LG has announced that it is bringing its OLED TV expertise to the XR (extended reality) field and plans to launch an as-yet-unnamed device next year.
According to a report from South Korea's The Guru , LG Electronics CEO Cho Joo-wan told a reporter at CES 2024 that "LG will launch an XR device as early as next year." However, it is currently unclear whether this will be the Meta Quest Pro 2 glasses or a completely new device from the company.
LG wants to enter the XR market with its expertise in OLED.
In February 2023, there were reports that Meta was looking to collaborate with LG to create OLED displays for their XR glasses – possibly for the Meta Quest Pro 2, but possibly also for the Meta Quest 4.
If the Quest Pro 2 is in development, it's safe to assume that 2025 will be the earliest the tech world sees the device. Meta typically introduces new XR hardware a year in advance and usually makes announcements at the Meta Connect event in September or October, so the device is likely to be announced in late 2024 and released in 2025.
There isn't much information available on the market yet; however, rumors circulated late last year on Korean news sites that LG was developing a virtual reality (VR) headset powered by the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip. Similar rumors accurately predicted that the Samsung XR/VR headset would use this new Qualcomm chipset, so it's highly likely LG will soon unveil a new VR product.
If LG's VR headset truly runs on the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen, it would be a high-end product capable of competing with devices like the upcoming Apple Vision Pro. The price could exceed $2,000.
Overall, it's highly likely that LG is working on an XR project without collaborating with Meta. The South Korean company possesses world- leading OLED display manufacturing capabilities, along with strong expertise in home entertainment, so creating an XR device under its own brand is quite logical.
