In an agreement reached on July 30, MetaGroup agreed to pay $1.4 billion to settle a lawsuit in which the state of Texas accused the tech giant of violating privacy laws with its feature that allows users to tag friends in photos on Facebook.
Under the agreement, Meta agreed to pay the amount over five years to settle claims that the tech giant illegally collected biometric data from Facebook users in Texas.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton called it a "historic" settlement, the largest ever in a single state-led lawsuit.
Attorney General Paxton stated that Texas filed the lawsuit in early 2022. This was the first time the state had sued a technology company for violating the Biometric Identification Collection or Use Act.
According to the lawsuit, the state of Texas alleges that Meta did not obtain user permission before its software proceeded to identify and tag people in photos. This identification and tagging feature has been in operation since 2011.
In a response the same day, a Meta spokesperson said the company agreed to resolve the issue and looked forward to exploring future opportunities to expand its business investments in Texas, including prospects for developing data centers.
