A doctor is suspected of defrauding the health insurance system of hundreds of millions of dong.

On December 12th, Dr. Le Van Tien, Director of Lam Dong General Hospital, announced that they are temporarily suspending the medical practice of Dr. LVN (Examination and Emergency Department, Lam Dong General Hospital) to investigate whether this doctor has violated regulations and defrauded the health insurance system of hundreds of millions of VND.

According to Dr. Tien, in the first nine months of 2023, Dr. N. "assisted" patients by providing home visits or prescribing medication on behalf of 53 patients who did not come to the hospital for examination, with a total value of nearly 900 million VND.

Following the discovery by authorities, the Health Insurance Assessment Department (Lam Dong Provincial Social Insurance) refused to pay health insurance medical expenses for the first nine months of 2023 for 19 verified cases totaling over 357 million VND (performed by Doctor N.); and temporarily withheld payment for health insurance medical expenses for 34 cases totaling over 527 million VND pending further verification.

According to Dr. Tien, by December 12th, Dr. N. had voluntarily returned the misappropriated funds totaling over 357 million VND.

Previously, Doctor N. admitted to the Board of Directors of Lam Dong General Hospital that he had abused the trust of colleagues and patients, violated the rules for prescribing health insurance drugs, and violated the medical examination and treatment procedures of the Ministry of Health .

On the same day, Mr. Tran Van Son, Deputy Director of the Social Insurance Department of Lam Dong province, said that they are coordinating with Lam Dong General Hospital to urgently check and review all cases of doctor N. examining patients and prescribing medicine in 2023.

According to Mr. Son, this is the largest case of health insurance violation in Lam Dong province to date.
