The U.S. Department of Agriculture has authorized two startups, Good Meat and UPSIDE Foods, to sell chicken meat that they cultivate directly from animal cells, making the U.S. the second country in the world (after Singapore) to allow the sale of lab-grown meat to consumers.
In November 2022, these two companies received similar approvals from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), confirming that the lab-grown chicken meat produced by these companies is safe for consumer health.
In the meat culture process, cells are taken from animals using a non-invasive biopsy method, and then placed in a "bioreactor" containing a solution of nutrients such as salt, protein, and carbohydrates.
At the right temperature, cultured cells will grow exponentially.
