The US government has signed an $80 billion deal with Brookfield Asset Management and Cameco, the companies that own the Westinghouse nuclear power corporation, to boost electricity production for artificial intelligence (AI) development.

A Brookfield spokesman said the deal is related to US President Donald Trump’s May 2025 executive order to build 10 new large-scale reactors with complete designs by 2030. The deal marks the most tangible US investment in nuclear energy since Mr. Trump returned to the White House in January 2025.

The initiative will help realize President Trump’s vision to energize America and win the global AI race, Energy Secretary Chris Wright said. The president promised a nuclear energy revival and is delivering on it.

The newly announced investment will be for about eight Westinghouse AP1000 nuclear power plants or a combination of larger facilities and small modular reactors, according to Brookfield.

Each of the two-unit plants sustains 45,000 manufacturing and engineering jobs in 43 states, and the nationwide rollout will create more than 100,000 construction jobs.

Tech giants like Google and Microsoft have also announced major nuclear energy initiatives to meet the huge demand related to AI.
