The US is strengthening its domestic rare earth supply chain.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced it will allocate up to $134 million in funding to strengthen the domestic rare earth supply chain. Rare earth elements play a vital role in the defense industry, power generation, and electric vehicle engines. This $134 million in support will focus on projects to recover and refine rare earths from unconventional sources such as mining waste, electronic waste, and other industrial waste, thereby reducing reliance on foreign suppliers.
According to Energy Secretary Chris Wright, for a long time, the United States relied on other nations for the minerals and materials that fueled its economy . The U.S. possessed these resources, but years of complacency led to the loss of its mining and industrial base to other countries. Under President Donald Trump's leadership, the U.S. is reversing that trend, rebuilding its capacity to extract, process, and produce materials essential to energy security and economic stability.
Rare earth elements such as praseodymium, neodymium, terbium, and dysprosium are essential components in advanced manufacturing, defense systems, and high-performance magnets used in power generation and electric motors. By investing in domestic REE recovery and processing capabilities, the DOE is working to ensure America's energy independence, enhance economic competitiveness, and guarantee the long-term sustainability of the national supply chain.
