Speaking at the Vietnam AI Future Building Program, launched on July 11th by the National Innovation Center (NIC), the Ministry of Planning and Investment , and Google, Mr. Marc Woo stated that the current digital economy in Southeast Asia is experiencing remarkable growth, reaching a value of $100 billion (eight times in just eight years) and is projected to reach $835 billion by 2030, thanks to artificial intelligence (AI).

"In particular, Vietnam's digital economy will grow elevenfold by 2030, reaching $220 billion, equivalent to nearly half of Vietnam's current GDP," said Marc Woo.

According to a Google representative, AI will be one of the key factors for Vietnam to realize the above forecast.

According to Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Tran Duy Dong, amidst the wave of AI technology development, Vietnam is taking strong steps to promote research, application, and development of AI human resources. After three years of implementing the "National Strategy on Research, Development, and Application of Artificial Intelligence to 2030," Vietnam has achieved encouraging results, notably ranking 55th in the world in the AI Readiness Index in 2022, an increase of 7 places compared to 2021.

However, Vietnam is also facing a significant challenge: a shortage of personnel and experts in the field of AI. It is estimated that there are currently only about 300 AI experts in Vietnam's workforce. This scarcity of human resources, coupled with a lack of access to high-quality AI training programs, further widens the gap between market demand and the available workforce.

Besides the talent shortage, AI startups in Vietnam also face challenges such as a lack of access to experts and mentors to evaluate and assess AI products to determine their suitability for market needs.

Vietnamese AI startups also lack access to infrastructure, platforms, and tools readily available for businesses. These are considered essential elements for the development, commercialization, and scaling of AI products.

To address these challenges and promote comprehensive AI development in Vietnam, the Vietnam AI Future Building Program focuses on two main pillars: Building for Talent and Building for Businesses. Each pillar addresses key areas to support the development of Vietnam's human resources, nurture its thriving startup ecosystem, and strengthen the foundation for maximizing AI adoption.

Specifically, the "Creating Talent" pillar focuses on a digital talent development program providing 40,000 scholarships across 10 courses, including the newly launched Google AI Essentials course, to equip young Vietnamese people, including many officials, lecturers, and students from over 80 universities and colleges nationwide, with the latest AI skills.

For the "Empowering Businesses" pillar, which aims to promote innovation and develop solutions for local startups, through the Google for Startups Accelerator, Google aims to support and promote Vietnamese startups in the AI era by equipping the startup ecosystem with business knowledge, supporting potential Vietnamese AI startups in developing, commercializing, and expanding their AI products to new markets…

Deputy Minister Tran Duy Dong affirmed that the program demonstrates the strong commitment and support of the Ministry of Planning and Investment and Google in promoting the AI ecosystem in Vietnam, aiming to equip human resources with the necessary skills to seize the opportunities of the AI era, while also supporting innovative startups based on AI technology.
