On August 17, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the Kiev authorities had begun preparing to provoke Russian nuclear facilities and that the international community must recognize this danger.
Zakharova pointed out that "according to available information, the Kiev authorities have begun preparing to attack the Kursk nuclear power plant."
A spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry said: "We call on international organizations – especially the United Nations and the IAEA – to immediately condemn the provocative actions prepared by the Kiev authorities and to prevent violations of nuclear and physical security at the Kursk nuclear power plant, which could lead to a large-scale man-made catastrophe in Europe."
According to Zakharova, Kyiv is also "undermining the IAEA's principles of nuclear and physical safety, which were set out by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi in 2022."
In a related development, on the same day, Russian media reported that the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) had opened a criminal investigation into two Italian journalists who had visited the turbulent Kursk region, accusing them of illegally crossing the border.
Russian news agency RIA quoted the FSB as saying that the agency had initiated legal proceedings against "two foreign journalists, Simone Traini and Stefania Battistini, who illegally crossed the border into the Russian Federation and filmed videos in the Sudzha settlement in the Kursk region."
