GĐXH - The man diagnosed with esophageal cancer said he had smoked for 20 years, drank alcohol regularly, and had never had a gastroscopy or colonoscopy.

Mr. NTA (62 years old, residing in Hanoi ) said that although his body showed no unusual symptoms, he decided to have a health check-up at Medilatec General Hospital to ensure his well-being for the Lunar New Year.

Upon taking his medical history, Mr. A stated that he had smoked for 20 years, regularly consumed alcohol, and had never undergone a gastroscopy or colonoscopy. During this examination, the doctor ordered the necessary tests and an esophago-gastroduodenoscopy.

The results showed that Mr. A's colon had a semi-pedunculated polyp approximately 1 cm in size; one lesion in the pharyngeal region approximately 1 cm in size; and one lesion in the middle third of the esophagus approximately 2.5 cm in size.

Using magnified NBI endoscopy technology, the observed lesion had a type B1 altered vascular structure. Suspecting malignancy, the doctors took a biopsy sample for histopathology. The conclusion was low-grade squamous epithelial dysplasia.

Doctors diagnosed the patient with hypopharyngeal lesions suspected for early cancer - low-grade squamous epithelial dysplasia of the esophagus - atrophic gastritis C2 Hp (+) - gastrointestinal metaplasia - colon polyps.

Dr. Luu Tuan Thanh, Head of the Gastroenterology Department at the hospital, said: "Patient NTA had three risk factors for the disease: being over 60 years old; having a history of alcohol consumption and smoking. In this patient, the diagnosis of esophageal cancer was made by chance during a routine health check-up."

What you need to know about esophageal cancer

According to Dr. Thanh, esophageal cancer in its early stages often has no obvious symptoms, so it is easily overlooked.

Individuals with risk factors such as: being over 50 years old; alcohol and tobacco abuse; being overweight or obese; or having esophageal conditions such as ulcers or Barrett's esophagus should have a health check-up annually, either every 6 months or once a year.

If you experience unusual symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, a feeling of something stuck in your throat, a burning sensation or discomfort behind the breastbone, coughing up blood, etc., you should see a doctor immediately for early detection and timely diagnosis.
