AP reported that the explosion occurred outside a police station in the center of the town of Coahuayana, Michoacan state, where many criminal gangs operate, at noon on December 6. The Attorney General's Office said the number of victims killed in the explosion had increased to 5. In addition, 12 others were injured in the explosion.
"Three of the dead and five injured were members of the community police force," the prosecutor's office said. The vehicle that exploded was a pickup truck and its driver was also among those killed at the scene.

The explosion occurred as the state's governor, Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla, was attending an event with President Claudia Sheinbaum in Mexico City to celebrate the Morena Party's seventh anniversary in power.
For two decades, several organized crime groups have fought for control of the territory because Michoacán is a "gateway" for chemical precursors used in the production of synthetic drugs. They also carry out extortion rackets.
At least three of the six drug cartels the Trump administration has designated as terrorist organizations — Jalisco New Generation, United Cartels and The New Michoacan Family — operate in Michoacán, along with a host of armed separatist groups in the country, some supported by the Sinaloa Cartel.
