Taking advantage of water resources to raise silver carp - rare fish

Although the silver carp is not too difficult to raise, this fish breed usually grows very slowly if raised in a natural way. A silver carp will only gain about 1kg in weight in a year if fed only with foods available in nature.

However, in return, when sold to the market, this fish has a much higher economic value than other types of fish.

Depending on the size, the fish cost from 300,000 VND/kg for 3kg fish to 500,000 - 600,000 VND/kg depending on the weight of the fish. The heavier the fish and the longer it has been raised, the higher the value.

Mr. Hoang Van Chien's family (Nam Chan village, Lam Thuong commune, Luc Yen district, Yen Bai province) lives near the upstream stream and has 2 ponds with an area of over 1000m2 of water surface. Therefore, for more than 10 years, Mr. Chien's family has taken advantage of this clean water source to raise silver carp.

With knowledge and experience gained over many years of raising, the fish grow and develop well, with few diseases. To get a high selling price for the output, Mr. Chien chooses to raise them naturally.

He uses available foods to raise silver carp, such as vegetables and starch grown by his family.

"Currently in this area, we mainly raise silver carp according to the experience left by our ancestors, raising them naturally. For example, my family can sell more than 100 kg of fish each year because this fish species grows slowly," Mr. Chien shared.

Mr. Hoang Tinh San's family (Nam Chan village, Lam Thuong commune, Luc Yen district, Yen Bai province) also has a 360m2 fish pond, each batch raises 400 - 500 silver carp.

After 10 years of raising silver carp, Mr. San's family has a stable income of over 100 million VND each year, which, along with other sources of income, has helped his family escape poverty.

"We here have a water source so we mainly raise silver carp. We cannot raise other animals because raising pigs, chickens, and cows is cheap and often causes losses due to disease.

I recently bought 200 more fish fry, which are being incubated. When they grow to about 3-4cm, I will release them into a larger pond," said Mr. San.

Raising silver carp helps people become well-off.

Due to favorable natural conditions regarding water resources, people in Lam Thuong commune have known how to raise silver carp for a long time.

At first, households raised this fish to get products for their daily life, but when they realized that this type of fish had high economic value and brought a stable source of income, they created a movement to raise this type of fish.

According to Lam Thuong commune's report, up to now, the whole commune has 1,400 households with over 1,000 ponds, the ponds have areas from a few dozen square meters to thousands of square meters.

Each year, the output of silver carp in Lam Thuong commune reaches 15 to 20 tons, bringing in an income of 5 to 7 billion VND. Thanks to the development of silver carp farming, many households in Lam Thuong have escaped poverty.

According to Mr. Hoang Van Chien's family's calculation, with the choice of raising in a natural direction, the weight of the silver carp after 4 to 5 years will reach over 4kg.

With the price of royal fish from 350,000 - 400,000 VND/kg, each year Mr. Chien's family earns about 400 million VND from silver carp.

Income from raising silver carp has helped Mr. Chien's family become a well-off household in the village.

However, because the fish grow so slowly, Mr. Chien's family is also thinking about switching to semi-industrial farming, which will keep the value of the fish and increase the economic profit on the same area.

"Our family is also building a model to move towards commercial farming. If we invest in semi-industrial farming, the economic value of the silver carp will certainly be higher," said Mr. Chien.

Talking to PV Dan Viet, Mr. Trieu Van Ly - Vice Chairman of Lam Thuong Commune People's Committee (Luc Yen District, Yen Bai Province) said: "Nature has blessed Lam Thuong Commune with a very clean water source. The silver carp has high nutritional value, the fish grows slowly but the quality is very good. Every year, silver carp also helps people have a high income.

The locality also determined that this is the right direction and continues to encourage people to replicate these silver carp farming models."

Up to now, the model of raising silver carp has not only developed in Lam Thuong commune, but also developed in many communes in Luc Yen district, Yen Bai province). Besides raising silver carp for economic development, currently, people in Lam Thuong commune also raise silver carp for tourism development, creating more attraction for community tourism in the area.
